Editorial Review

Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for? The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written in 1949 by Clive Staples Lewis, had all this and more. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a land where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations. Now, some of the most noted actors of our times have come together to read these extraordinary works.

This timeless boxed set includes all seven unabridged recordings: The Magician's nephew; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Horse and His Boy; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; and The Last Battle. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published.

Great Family Entertainment! 2008-09-28
"The Complete Chronicles of Narnia CD" set is one of my favorite all time purchases for my family! This is truly a bargain at this price for so many hours of quality entertainment that is safe for all ages.

All seven of the The Chronicles of Narnia series are included (The Magician's nephew; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Horse and His Boy; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; and The Last Battle). The writings of C.S. Lewis are firmly in realm of classic literature and, whether or not you choose to dwell on the obvious religious overtones, the story telling transcends the critics who would ban or promote these tales based solely on theological imagery.

The production quality of the CDs and recordings is of the highest standards and I expect this set to last us many years.

Highly recommend!

Lifelong Love 2008-09-13
The Complete Chronicles of Narnia CD Box Set

I've greatly enjoyed having these books on CD. It's nice that the narrators speak with British accents. I enjoyed that as well. I'm very thankful that an elementary school teacher introduced me to The Chronicles of Narnia! It has truly been a lifelong love.

Outstanding Books on CDs 2008-07-21
The Complete Chronicles of Narnia CD Box Set was an outstanding purchase. Not only are the books well read by famous voices, but they are accurate to a word. I've heard all but the last two and will share them with my 7 year old granddaughter when I'm done to introduce her to C.S. Lewis. My only disappointment was that I could not load them on to my computer to put them on my ipod for my walks, but I listen from my CD player in the house and enjoy every moment. I highly recommend the attractive and well done set. It does include some illustrations in case you do not have the books in your library.

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia CD Box Set 2008-07-15
I have to agree with a previous review, this is a FANTASTIC Audio production. The actors reading the books do a superb job: to the point that at times I don't believe it is the same person reading the different parts. They put such enthusiasm and character in to the voices and the readings that it makes the book come alive. Also a previous review recommended a different order in the reading of the books and I have to agree that the following order worked well for me.
1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2. Prince Caspian
3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Lewis planned on stopping the series here, but apparently it took on a life of its own)
4. The Silver Chair (Actually written after, but published before "The Horse and His Boy")
5. The Horse and his Boy
6. The Magician's Nephew (Could be read first but I am glad I read (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) first.
7. The Last Battle.
Note: I bought this series for my grand children and I have really enjoyed each and every book.

A great series 2008-07-07
We had seen the movies and heard of the series but never read them. We decided to purchase the complete seris on CD for a trip and they are awesome. I recommend these books for anyone wanting a good family friendly story. These were never boring and they are filled with good lessons; but not preachy.

Charming, inspirational, fun 2008-07-04
A favorite series since I was young, but seems to get better with age! I find the lessons and characters erupting --like magic-- into my own life. Though generally considered Christian-based, it stands alone.

The performances are all wonderful, but Kenneth Branagh is truly inspired in "The Magician's Nephew". He is a brilliant (as the Brits would say) story teller. It makes me laugh out loud just to think of his voices for the talking animals (the bulldog, she elephant, leopard...)

Great 2008-06-13
It is a great product. I enjoyed listening to it and the art on the boxs is great too.

Wardrobe 2008-05-05
Excellent reading of this wonderful adventure for "children" of all ages (I'm a grey-haired one).

He's no JK Rowling 2008-03-22
Having read and listened to the Harry Potter septology (brilliantly performed by Jim Dale) so many times to be embarrassing, I decided to check out what other fondly recalled tales I could have read to me in clever British accents. I was intrigued by the idea of having some of the great actors of stage and screen - Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart!), Patrick Stewart (Dr. Xavier), Lynn Redgrave, Micheal York, Alex Jennings, Derek Jacobi, and Jeremy Northam - read the Narnia story, which my husband and I tried reading to my daughter at bedtime over 15 years ago. Admittedly, I recalled that we had lost interest somewhere in the Silver Chair, but thought that was just our lack of dramatic reading talent.

Nope, turns out these stories are just not that great, even when great actors perform them. And the readings are truly excellent - all the actors do a fine job of changing accents, interpreting voices and accelerating the pace in the appropriate moments. It's just that these stories are a) childish, and b) racist.

It's very hard to listen to The Last Battle and The Horse and His Boy without thinking that CS Lewis would never have gotten away with publishing this now. If Christian groups are worried that JK Rowling is promoting Wiccan, imagine how non-christians (and there really are a lot of them) would feel about the images of Tashban and the Calormen people.

Anyhow, if you like listening to great British voices, it's ok as background noise, but if you want a great set of stories, stick with JK Rowling.
