Desperate Housewives' Secret Lovechild on the Loose!, Pt. I 2008-07-15
Remember the first season of "Desperate Housewives"? This first installment is better than that! The first book of this highly addictive series starts with former BFFs Spencer, Aria, Hanna and Emily receiving disturbing e-mails and texts from someone called "A". "A" seems to know there deepest, darkest secrets from their past and their present. Could "A" be Allison, their former Queen Bee and frenemy who mysterious disappeared a few years ago without a trace? Unexpected twists, turns and the girls' bond over an incident dubbed "The Jenna Thing" force them back together to solve the mystery of the person behind the mysterious texts while trying to keep "A" from exposing their damaging secrets. The subject matter (eating disorders, underage drinking, underage sex , homosexuality, shoplifting and cyberbullying), which seems to be the norm for most young adult series these days may seem off putting to sheltered teens and adults. Alternately, the mature subject matter can also provide opportunities for discussion, awareness and how peers and parental pressure contributes to these issues.

Totally amazing 2008-07-02
Oh my gosh. This book rocked. So much happens to the 4 friends right after "the jenna thing" and after alis disappearence that it is so suppensesful and just amazing at all the stuff going on with them. I'm just now working on the flawless but I'm not putting this series down until I find out who A is and Who Ali's killer is but I think A is Ali's killer but who knows.

Loved this book!!! 2008-06-07
A great ya read (even for an adult like me) that includes murder, mystery, drama, and even a bit of intrigue. I kept wanting to pick this book up and read it, even when I was supposed to be doing something else. The short chapters were great to read quick tidbits here and there and not be lost within a chapter. I liked how after almost every text or email the story went back to the 7th grade time frame to explain what it meant then and how it linked to what was happening now. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of this series!! :)

full of suspense-dont be put off by the cover! 2008-05-31
I passed up and read the inside of this books flap several times before picking it up and actually reading it. I was totally put off by the cover, because frankly, I thought it looked silly. Even the title sounded completely ridiculous. But this just goes to show, never judge a book by its cover! I finally decided to give it a chance, and I was glad I did. I've actually read the book several times, because each time you read it, you pick up on something new, and catch something you might not have noticed the first time around. Its full of suspense, and will keep you up all night reading it, because you'll be wanting to know what will happen next, and the suspenseful, edge of your seat, wanting to know what will happen next feeling, will continue throughout the rest of the series, so don't forget to read the following novels as well!

The book is revolves around four high school girls: Aria, Hannah, emily, and Spencer, who were once best friends, but became distant from one another after the mysterious disappearance of their best friend Ali, who went missing during the summer after 7th grade. They all hold a terrible secret, having to do with the reason that Ali may be missing, along with their own personal secrets that no else knew....except for Ali that is. They all lead seperate lives, until they begin receiving mysterious text messages from a person only known as "A" in which she reveals all their deep, dark secrets, and uses these secrets to blackmail them. Could it be....is Ali back? Or is someone else onto them? Someone who saw them the night that changed their lives forever...

I recommend this to pretty much everyone to read, because it is highly enjoyable, but I especially recommend this book for those of you who are fans of the Gossip Girl series because this series reminds me of that one. Granted, its completely different in some ways, but it has the same air of mystery, seeing as how the person described as "A" is annoymous, just as the mysterious blogger in "Gossip Girl" who always knows everything about everyone. So its pretty much a darker, more twisted verison of "gossip girl".

GARBAGE--not fit for minors 2008-05-07
In the first chapter, two 15/16 YO girls smoke marijuana. In the next chapter, a girl the same age goes to a bar, gets drunk, then has sex with an adult stranger in the bar's restroom. This book is nothing but garbage bordering on narrative child pornography. Shame on the book industry for marketing this trash to children. Parents, just because a book is in the teen section of the store or website doesn't mean it is actually suitable or appropriate for children--even teenagers.

Ever receive a message from someone, have no idea who sent it, then find out they had the wrong number? Hannah Marin, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields wish that was the case, but unfortunately, it's not. For them they are receiving messages from someone named "A," but it's not the wrong number. Know how they can tell? "A" is reminding them of all the secrets they try so hard to hide. Most of these secrets have been ones their former best friends, Ali DiLaurentis, knew. But Ali is dead, right?
Hannah, Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Ali were best friends; they have been since the summer before seventh grade when all of their parents volunteered them to work Saturday afternoons at Rosewood Day School's charity drive (except Spencer who volunteered herself.) The girls quickly bonded and soon became best friends. At the end of seventh grade everything was going great for all of them; they were just about to have their end-of-the-school sleepover. But when Spencer and Ali get into a fight, suddenly things take a turn for the worse. Ali leaves and doesn't return. By the next evening the police are called, and Ali is reported missing. The girls all appear worried, but secretly they are all relived. Ali knew all of their secrets. The things you never want to get out. The life changing secrets. And if Ali is dead, then she can't tell anyone, right? Wrong! Three years later, the girls are getting text messages from "A" -and "A" knows everything, and is taking ever chance to make these girls paranoid and scared. Every creak, every sound, makes these girls jump, wondering if "A's" around; because "A" would have to be to know not only all their seventh grade secrets but their new secrets too.
Who is "A"? Where's Ali? Is she dead or just missing? Is "A" Ali? Is "A" Ali's murderer? Is "A" going to tell everyone their secrets? These are the questions running though each of the girl's minds.
Read the exciting series: Pretty Little Liars, Flawless, Perfect, and Unbelievable (coming out May 27, 2008) to figure out all these questions. After Unbelievable, Shepard plans on writing four novels. Pretty Little Liars is one of the best books I've read; it's breathtaking -- the things these girls will do or how far "A" is willing to go. The book will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat and is unbelievably hard to put down. Pretty Little Liars was inspired by Shepard's upbringing in Philadelphia's main line.

Ugly Little Secrets 2008-03-07
At the beginning of the book there's a quote by Benjamin Franklin that reads, "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead." Well, imagine four girls, each with a secret, and a fifth girl who knows what those secrets are. The fifth girl's name is Alison, and at the end of seventh grade she vanishes. Her four friends - Hanna, Aria, Emily, and Spencer - are devastated, but also relieved. Now the four remaining girls are in their junior year and have drifted apart, moving on to new secrets that someone known only as A seems to know all about.

Each chapter is dedicated to one of the girls, depicting what's going on in her life: Hanna is a shoplifter with an eating disorder; Aria is pursuing a relationship with her English teacher; Emily is beginning to wonder if she might be gay; and Spencer is attracted to her sister's boyfriend. In addition to all the drama currently unfolding in their lives and their individual hidden secrets, they all share a memory of having done something horrible, referred to as the "Jenna thing" throughout the book. They were all party to what happened, but it was Alison who had committed the actual wrongdoing. You never really learn what the "Jenna thing" is, but by the end of the book, you know it's pretty bad. This deepens the suspense and adds weight to the question, Is Alison back and, if so, how much harm is she truly capable of doing?

The book is a quick read and doesn't really resolve the whole story, which continues into the next book of the series. In a lot of books this can be frustrating, but this story is engrossing enough to make you want to read more. Sure, there are some parts that will make you say, "Yeah, right, like that could ever happen!" But if you push through those parts and continue reading, you should get your money's worth in entertainment.
