A decent effort
2008-05-13
It is admirable that Laura and Jenna Bush made this effort, and I hope the proceeds will benefit some worthy literacy cause. However, the book itself is nothing special. There is nothing there to charm a young reader and demand many re-readings. The writing is somewhat pedantic, a little bit preachy, and gave me the impression it was knocked off on one lunch hour. Having said that, I do applaud the efforts of Mrs. Bush and Jenna to make even a less than perfect attempt to promote reading. Persuading the administration to boost funding for libraries and after-school reading programs would be better, but that's not going to happen, so we might as well be grateful for the efforts we get.
poorly written

Dull writing and a trite message make this book a waste of time. I can't imagine any child enjoying it.
Contribution to children's literacy

Barbara and Jenna,
Thank you for writing this book. I too had a Tyrone as a student in my teaching career! I like the way you reinforced in your interviews the benefits of reading to children when they are babies. They learn left to right progression, page turning and learn to follow the spoken and written word. The added benefit is a caring relationship of child and reader. I cannot wait to read this book to my grandson. I will give this book as shower and birthday gifts. Thank you for such a positive project with proceeds to benefit recruiting teachers.
"Great" Way to Introduce Reading

This book just proves that celebrities could vomit onto a blank page and publishers would publish it.
What a great book...

great idea to get kids interested in reading!

What an excellent way to interest kids in reading! I have 2 boys, who are reluctant readers, and they will love this story! Thanks for keeping kids and literacy at the top of the list!
Another Celebrity Author
2008-04-23
Jenna Bush, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Madonna, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, and others are among those published. This is while talented authors are turned down. Obviously the name of a celebrity will sell books, since many judge a book by its cover. Shame on the publishers and more shame on the buyers.
"Read All About It".....A Great Children's Book!
2008-04-23
I, along with my 6 year old son, had the distinct pleasure of meeting First Lady Laura Bush and Jenna Bush this evening at the 92nd Street Y in New York City,as well as purchasing "signed copies" of their new children's book. They read their book entitled "Read All About It" along with a slide show of the illustrations from their new book. It was a wonderful experience to listen to them read their book and understand the characters that they created. They also discussed the importance of literacy and education. A portion of the proceeds from their book will benefit two national teacher programs: Teach for America and the New teacher Project. This evening's event was moderated by Vogue magazine writer, Julia Reed.
"Read All About It" is about a boy named Tyrone who excels at math and science, as well as playing on the monkey bars but absolutely dislikes the thought of reading books. He believes that books are boring until one day he actually listened to his teacher reading a book to the class about an astronaut. At that moment Tyrone's whole world turned upside down and books that his teacher read to the class actually came to life. Tyrone then finds himself on an adventure along with his friends in quest of finding a pig that has become their friend. He then learns that the pig and all the characters that had come to life were found in the school's library. Finally, Tyrone's teacher explains to Tyrone you never know who you are going to meet in a book.
