Editorial Review

Dear Reader,

Before you throw this awful book to the ground and run as far away from it as possible, you should probably know why. This book is the only one which describes every last detail of the Baudelaire children's miserable stay at Heimlich Hospital, which makes it one of the most dreadful books in the world.

There are many pleasant things to read about, but this books contains none of them. Within its pages are such burdensome details as misleading newspaper headlines, unnecessary surgery, an intercom system, anesthesia, heart-shaped balloons, and some very startling news about such things.

I have sworn to research this story, and to write it down as best I can, so I should know that this book is something best left on the ground, where you undoubtedly found it.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

I like it when the man puts in emotion 2008-09-27
This story introduces a deepening mystery, as well as a tongue-in-cheek examination of the various "do-gooders" of the world, tear-jerking emotion, and some hilarious macabre moments. Great setting, great story, and some great little unfortunate incidents.

Great Kids Book! 2008-04-07
My son is really enjoying reading this series of books. He doesn't read much so it says a lot when he continues to read night after night.

"The Hostile Hospital" 2007-10-14
This has got to be one of my most favorite book throughout the series! Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudalaire are three wealthy, intelligent children who become orphans after their parents have been killed in a fire that destroyed their entire home. They meet their gaurdian, Count Olaf, a cruel man whose trying to steal their fortune their parents left behind! Now, the three of them must escape from him as much as possible.

Violet, the oldest, is 14-years-old, and always has her ribbon tied up in her hair to keep it out of her eyes when she's thinking of a new invention. She does this to get out of a situation she and/or her siblngs are in.
Klaus, the middle child, is 12-years-old, and a great scholer. He has read a big amount of books and knows many difficult words you would find in "Webster's Dictionary and Thesaurus." He's also read many historic happenings, which might come in handy if he and/or his siblings are in a similar event.
Sunny, the youngest, is a baby, and has four front sharp teeth, which she enjoys using for biting. Like other babies, she shrieks any baby talk. But her siblings always know what she's saying. In fact, Sunny always knows what's going on, too!

I thought this was going to be an excellent story, and it is! If you think being in a hospital is dreadfully boring, you'd be wrong about the Baudelaires' stay in this book! And I have to admit, I was getting a huge quiver/flutter in my tummy right when I saw the illustration on page 121, thinking this might be the answer to why on the UK cover of this book, Violet was lying on a hospital bed, wearing a very baggy-looking white dress (along with a heart-shaped balloon with a smiley face hanging in front of her head). That's where I stopped reading until tommorrow.

I know you'll enjoy this, maybe even if you want to become a docter/nurse when you get older! So read it, as you picture Violet, Klaus, and Sunny in their medical adventure at Heimlich Hospital!

"But this might be the right VFD" 2007-08-19

A Scary book 2007-08-03
I love this series of books. The writer is consistent. The stories are entertaining as well as educational. Highly recommended.

More questions to look forward to being answered. some spoilers! 2007-04-23
These books are definitely repetitive in the way they are written. You still don't know what the real V.F.D. is, which is getting a little annoying because we readers have been wanting to know that answer for the past 3 books or so. I also want to know what is in the 13 pages of the Snicket fires file. I want to know what the eye tattoos on the left ankle of Jacques Snicket, Count Olaf, and Lemony Snicket have in common. We also know that Jacques and Lemony knew the Baudelaire parents due to the page 13 photograph. I thought it was a good ending with the Baudelaire's in the trunk of Olaf's van or car because Olaf is looking for the Baudelaires and their just in the trunk, and the Baudelaires are trying to stay away from Olaf, but need to be close to him in order to find out what the file says.
Hopefully the series will get more interesting.

A Pretty Good Book 2007-03-02
In this book Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are trying to get away from Count Olaf of course. The problem is though is that everybody thinks they're murderers which isn't true, but people think they are because they read a newspaper called The Daily Punctilio. Also that they killed Count Olaf. They stowed away in a VFD truck and they're also trying to find out what VFD means. They go inside this crazy hospital and Count Olaf disquises himself as a docter. And then what happenes is he captures Violet and is going to do a head operation on her that has never been done before. So Klaus and Sunny basically pretend that they're part of the VFD crew and figures out a riddle to find the room she's in and stop the operation before it begins.

What I like about this book is the fact that there are so many mysteries not even a detective could find out. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are a smart group of kids and I just like the fact that they can always out run Count Olaf and his devious plots to get the Baudelaire fortune. I LOVE mystery books and I think that it's a pretty good book.

What I didn't like about this book is that I thought that there would be more sadness and action in this book. That's usually what I read in these books is more sad parts and a lot more action.

This book is a cool mystery and a big surprise. You'll never suspect some things to happen and sometimes you will. You'll never know until you read it!

A close shave this time 2007-01-28
The 8th installment is darker than the previous installments of this series. Close calls for the 3 main characters are quite a close shave indeed in this book that would glue you to this one until you're finished with this one.

The three Baudelaire orphans, Violet (the inventor), Klaus (the intelligent) and Sunny (the biter) are on the run because they are now three most wanted fugitives who are charged with murder of the Count Omar (Olaf by misprint of The Daily Punctilio). They needed shelter where they could hide and hopefully people won't recognised them from the pictures printed on the Daily Punctilio regardless they misnamed them. A chance encounter with the ever so suspicious VFD (this time Volunteers Fighting Diseases), brought them to the Heimlich Hospital because they were on the run from the store keeper who recognized them.

Things took a worse turn (again), when they heard a very familiar voice in the speaker. Count Olaf (the one who are after their entire fortune and would do anything to get it. and i mean ANYTHING!) found them again and this time with a chance they found the files about their parents in the Library of Records, which Count Olaf was looking for. Esme Squalor however found them and Violet got captured when the Baudelaire orphans split up. This time the Baudelaire orphans found themselves a fixed where Violet was about to get kill by Count Olaf's crew!

I have to admit, it took me a while before I actually reach this book and sit down with it. The characters really pull me in with the fast thumping plots. The kids grew up with you in this book. You'd find them in a much mature state, Sunny finally could utter real 1-2 words. There is also the usual vocabulary lessons between the storylines. I pretty much enjoyed reading this installment like the earlier ones. I'm sure the lot of you would too.
