Life changing book
2008-04-29
I can't say enough about this book. It offers hope to helping, if not healing, disorders that previously had been only treated with 'band aid' type solutions. Having children with 3 of the 4 "A" disorders, I was anxious to see what the authors had to say about cause and treatment. I had so many questions and no answers until I read this book. We have started implementing the outlined treatment (with the help of a doctor), and are already clearly on the road to success. The results thus far have not been as dramatic as some of the case studies in the book, but it is quite obvious the pieces are coming together with my childrens treatments. The future is going to be a much brighter and happier place for them.

I was a bit "put-off" by the case study stories because I perceived them as him bragging or boasting. However, some of them provided a little hope and once you get to the good stuff, it is worth putting up with the rest of it. This book provides pertinent information that you can use to take charge of your child's health and medical care.
Autistic children can be helped--This book is a blessing!

We have been working with Dr. Bock for about four years and our son (now 18 years old) who is considered to be "on the spectrum" (most said Asperger's; some said PDD-NOS)has made tremendous strides.
When I went to my first DAN! Conference in 2004 what immediately surprised me was how the doctors who spoke said it was the parents--not the doctors--who need to take charge of their children's treatment and healing programs. Highly effective doctors like Dr. Bock are very much in demand. Appointments are made months in advance and then you have only so much time with the doctor--not that he doesn't want to give you more time but so many other patients are waiting! Therefore a parent needs to get as much understanding of what the problems are, what the treatments are supposed to do and how they work. Fortunately there are books like this as well as the internet that can provide this vitally needed education. It is clear that there is no one single cause of autism and as a result, no two autistic children are exactly alike.
When it comes to autism there are some treatments that aim at treating the effect while others aim at treating the cause. However, it is only the latter that truly promote healing. Healing a child's autism is not like treating an infection with antibiotics. Using natural treatments--vitamin mineral, herbal, enzyme, and nutritional supplements as well as dietary changes and hyperbaric oxygen can result in significant progress but the natural healing process, unlike treating with drugs, is painstakingly slow. Our son's digestion was also helped by another doctor, who gave him a homeopathic remedy.
We know that over time all cells in the body are replaced by new ones and my aim and hope is always that any defective cells in the brain or elsewhere be replace by new, healthy ones. This cell replacement process continues throughout life and so I believe there is hope for older people as well. In addition, we try to eat a natural diet and avoid nutritionally useless junk food. It's all been costly and we've pretty much have had to pay out of pocket for everything. But the fact that our son now has friends and is looking forward to going to college next year is for us priceless.
I know parents of autistic children who are either demanding that the government do something for them or else they sit around feeling sorry for themselves. There are always things WE can and should do. As for the government, it takes a lot more than it gives and makes us into a nation of guinea pigs by allowing all kinds of toxins into our foods and our environment in general. We all know a spoonful of arsenic can kill you, yet the government allows small quantities of arsenic in chicken feed. Is that going to do anyone any good? As for vaccinations, Americans should know that the government of Japan, the country with the world's highest life expectancy (unlike the U.S., which is around No. 48), banned the MMR vaccine in 1994.
In conclusion, this is an excellent book for families of children affected by any of the new childhood epidemics, as Dr. Bock refers to them. Also all couples who are expecting or planning to have children in the future should at least read the part about vaccines.

Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.
Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.
Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.
In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.
From the Hardcover edition.

I loved the book. I am excited to add it to my childcare library of resources. I know my daycare parents will appreciate it. I have already shared it with two parents who also really like this text. It is written really well.
Finally an explanation that makes sense

I am a school psychologist who worked for years in a preschool for children with special needs that specializes in autism. While working there, I began to wonder what exactly was causing autism. I lost touch with this curiosity when I started working in a public school but my interest was re-ignited when my nephew started displaying symptoms of PDD. I have read a lot of information on the topic and many different theories on the cause of autism but those explanations never seemed plausable to me. Dr. Bock's explanation made complete sense to me. I am sure that his approach of being an investigator to find the root cause of the autism rather than using the same treatment approach with all children is the reason for his success in helping children to "recover." I feel very fortunate to live within a reasonable driving distance from Rhinebeck so that I can bring my nephew to him for treatment. I highly recommend that anyone interested in understanding what causes autism read this book. I am in the process of reading it again so that I can fully understand all the different factors. The book is somewhat technical but his case studies help the reader to understand the information and the success that can be acheived with his approach.
Interesting and Informative Book

This book was recommended to me by my pediatrician. I have found it to be very informative and interesting. The individual case stories are a nice addition. I do not have a child with autism so the latter half of the book was not as interesting to me. I do have a young child with allergies and eczema though and my pediatrician recommended the delayed vaccination schedule based on this book since those illnesses are often seen in children with Autism. I would recommend this book.
