Editorial Review

When parenting authorities Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish sat down to write the national bestseller How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, they found that they couldn't contain their chapter on sibling rivalry. No matter how much they tried to pare down their advice, they found the subject inexhaustible -- and their readers agreed!

The result is this seminal book -- revised and updated after more than ten years of feedback from parents' letters, TV and radio talk shows, and Faber and Mazlish's highly successful parenting workshops. Siblings Without Rivalry guides the way to family peace and tranquillity with humor and compassion for both parents and children. Illustrated, action-oriented, and easy to understand, it's packed with sensitive yet sensible ways to turn quarreling siblings and frustrated parents into an open, communicative family.

Some good information, but condescending 2008-01-29
The authors feel you're too stupid to learn from actually reading something. No, they feel you'll learn best by reading a friggin' comic strip of parents and kids talking. I finished the book because I paid money for it, but the whole time I felt as if the authors have high opinions of themselves, and not so much of an opinion for all others.

Great read 2008-01-20
Very easy to read and well worth it no matter what how old your kids are.

Great book, but harder than it seems! 2007-12-31
These are the best books on parenting I have come across (this and 'How to talk...'). It takes a lot of practice, but when I actually manage to follow its advice, I'm amazed at the results.

Practical, respectul of parents and children 2007-12-04
What I like most about this book is not its practicality (it's VERY practical -- you can do this stuff ASAP), but its underlying theme that dealing with sibling problems helps build children's self-worth. There's tons of great examples on how to get your kids to stop fighting -- what to say and how to say it in the right way. That's the practical part. But underneath everything is the fact that sibling rivalry can affect us well into adulthood and define who we are as people. The authors show us that helping siblings get along isn't just nice for our own peace and quiet, but that in the long term it helps our children feel confident and learn to creatively solve problems on their own.

There's also cartoon examples that are easy to show/share with other caregivers who aren't reading the entire book.

very helpful ideas 2007-11-14
I thought this book was helpful in shedding light on what is truly going on between siblings. While the concepts to be applied are simple, I found it very helpful to understand the underlying thoughts of the kids. It includes some very basic parenting techniques that really do work! I've found that my 5-year-old responds well to some of the techniques suggested. However, my 2-year-old isn't yet to that level of understanding. So, I've found it beneficial with my older child, and I'm sure my son will catch up once he's a bit older. Overall, I really liked the book.

Helping Children Get Along 2008-06-04
A wonderful book on helping siblings get along. But I also highly recommend for parents and teachers the book:Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. More than a bullying book, this really focuses on practical strategies, scripts, actual lessons and stories to teach children conflict resolution, friendship and communication skills; the importance of helping others and getting along with a great design for creating environments that foster love and peace.

god advice 2008-05-06
This book provides good, simple advice and interesting case studies that provide good examples of how to use the advice.

Great book! 2008-04-28
I have read hundreds of parenting books and this one is one of the best by far. It gives you concise, easy directions on things to follow. I keep it out to use as a reference all the time. You cannot go wrong with this book.

A lifesaver! 2008-02-18
This book sure helped me survive being a parent! It helped so much that the book was written in a way that I could pick it up, read quickly for the few uninterrupted minutes I could actually get, and then put it down. The cartoons were great- there were some that I copied and hung up around the house as reminders to myself, for the habits that I wanted to form. This book especially helped me learn when to step into sibling disputes, and when to let them work it out. Now that my children are pretty much grown, I'd have to say that this book was probably the most helpful in raising them. They get along quite well!

Best Book EVER!!! 2008-02-03
This book is priceless. All my friends who have a second child get a copy of this book. ****The trick to this book is to re-read it every 6 months.*** We all have a tendency to fall back into old habits. I always know when it is time to re-read it because my kids start fighting and getting on my nerves again. I stumbled across this book accidentally and it has made alll the difference in my life and my kids life. It won't solve all the problems your kids have with each other but it takes you out of the loop so it doesn't bother you so much and they learn to deal with each other in a healthy way.
