Of Lasting Value

Children learn to love poetry by poets whose work they will study in high school and college. Among these greats are Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Frost. I highly recommend this book.
The Best Book of Poetry for Children. The Benchmark
2006-11-27
This outstanding collection of poems for children should be a part of every child's book collection. No other poetry collection is better. My children own several books of poetry, and I have reviewed several similar collections at the library and in book stores, and "The Random House Book of Poetry for Children" is the best of them all.
The poems are mostly silly and very entertaining. We sometimes like to take turns picking out poems to read at bedtime. Humorous children's poems help build creativity. I can think of nothing negative about this book.
Put this book in your cart and buy it. You will be happy that you did.
Well Organized, Commendable Variety, and Entertaining Illustrations

What a fantastic way to wet a child's appetite(or adults, for that matter) for poetry! This collection offers the silly and the sad, the simple and verbose, the long and the short, and the wise and other wise. =) Children can request which poems they may choose to use the extensive index or well organized table of contents to find exactly what they are looking for (Halloween poems, poems about nature or school, etc). This is a perfect fit from nightstand to classroom shelf. I highly recommend this collection of poetry.
A Great Way to Start Your Collection

This book is filled with poetry for any and every occasion and has great illustrations to go along. It is a good book to help you discover what type of poetry your children will enjoy.
this is for "children" 9 and older?
2005-11-28
The collection doesn't sound too bad, but won;t a self-respecting 9 year old (or older) person reject this book simply on the basis of the illustrations (you klnow, the ones with the "round faced happy children") and the title of the book? I know when I was nine I avoided books with "children's" in their title.
A Perennial Gift

As a middle school reading teacher, I host an annual Poetry Reading Competition open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. For the past several years, this book has been a prize, in addition to plaques for the first and second prize winners. The best review for this book is that the children use it, read it, and often select poems from it for their entry pieces. Even better, perhaps, is that I have had thanks from many parents for awakening an interest in poetry in their children, boys and girls alike. This volume of poetry offers a full range of poems, for short to long, humorous to sublime, and in a wide range of topics. While it is just one of a wide selection of books and poets I offer my students, it is one of the most versatile. Whether teaching rhyme scheme, simile and metaphor, slanted rhyme, figurative language, or stress, this is also an invaluable part of my teaching arsenal.
Just so so..

Not as exciting or holding interest as the 20th Century Anthology by the same author...
Great Book for children

Along with funny and cute drawings, good short stories about anything and everything is in this book. I am using this book to read to children, and they like it very much. They laughed.
For young and old children

The copy I bought for my granddaughter Kate in 1990 is tattered and worn. She and I still remember sitting in my recliner, reading to one another. I'm still reading but Kate is a Marine in Iraq right now. I email poems that we shared and others that remind her of home. I won't risk sending her OUR COPY but I've ordered another to put in our next package.

This book provides a new mix of poetry for children and goes beyond the usual mix of the familiar. All of the comforting poems you remember from your own childhoold are there but much, much more. You will love finding gems you've forgotten as well as new delights. I buy this book now for all new parents.
