Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
J.K. Rowling
1999
The plot is better than the first book's. The characters remain entertaining -- there's less world-creation, so more time can be dedicated to the main content of the story.
And again, just as with the first, it's not a bad book. It doesn't "feel" juvenile, at all -- it has good characters and a well-thought out plotline.
More of Harry's fears are explored -- and answered -- in this volume, as mysterious "petrification spells" roam around Hogwarts. As students are fpimd frozen, some feared to be dead, naturally it will be Harry Potter who finds the root of the issues and saves the day.
The rest of the old familiar faces are back, too, but though the spiraling new plot, there's no development of characters. Even after a year, none of them have changed, except perhaps for Harry who grows more ponderous. Old characters have new antics, yes, and new characters have new antics, but there's no more depth to them than in "The Sorcerer's Stone". A pity, this...
All in all, it's a fair successor to the first, which enriches the Magic World and explains more their dealings with the Muggle, human world.
6.8/10
Lived up to expectations!

Yes it's true; after all these years, I'm finally reading the Harry Potter books, although we've seen the movies out thus far. Usually I prefer to read a book before seeing the movie based on it, but this way is great fun too, because the casting, costuming, and scenery of the movies seem so close to what Ms Rowling wrote that I can picture scenes from the movies as I read. Anyway, as with the first book, this one just sails along, with writing clearly geared toward children, yet still entertaining for us oldsters. I've got the next two out of the library and it's just about all I can do to keep going on the other book I've started in between and not throw it over so I can dig in to Prisoner of Azkaban! If you don't think you like to read, read these books, and you'll change your mind!

This is the second book in the Harry Potter series. My daughter decided to collect all seven books in hardcover, so I purchased it for her for Christmas. She is obsessed with Harry Potter and is rereading all seven books. If your child or if you are a Harry Potter fan, you will have to buy this book.
