Not that great
2008-05-15
After two or three of these books, the plot becomes dull and loses its humor. Also, I would not recommend these for children learning to read and write as they are filled with misspellings (picher for picture and shurely for surely). I don't quite get why this is supposed to be funny, but it's confusing and ultimately detrimental for my 8 year old.
Finally, parents take note: Pilkey has created a lucrative business based on potty humor and his inability to draw above a 3rd grade level. This is the junk food of the children's book industry. Many young children will find these books funny, but just as we don't allow our kids to eat candy and chips all day, these books should be limited.

This book is outstanding! It is the best book I have ever read. I like it because it is gross and very funny! I give it five stars.
My son can't stop reading these

For an elementary-school-aged child, these books are great. My son needs no prompting to read them.
There's a bit of 'potty talk' in there, but I find them hilarious!
Some of the best books for this age that I've seen.
My son is all over them

My son is devouring them and, in doing so, is pushing himself to read more.
The cartoon sections are deliberately laden with grammatical errors - they are supposed to be written by our two mischievous schoolboy heros - and the humor, while genuinely funny, is puerile. But hey! It's targeted at little boys. What do you expect?
Very worthwhile purchase.
Great buy!

My 8 year old son loves these books! We read them together at night and he is in stitches. Some may wonder if the books are a bit inappropriate, but it's all in good fun. Children know George and Harold's antics are not realistic, yet they can enjoy fantasizing about such craziness at school.

The New Captain Underpants Collection: Box Set (Books 1-5)
Entertaining and easy to read. The kids love these books.
Really funny and well written

This series is really terrific. I remember reading these when I was young and laughing hysterically. Now my daughter does the same. Thanks, Dav Pilkey, for creating such wonderful and funny books! Don't let the name fool you - these books are not filled with toilet humor like Spongebob. These are intelligent and thoughtful fantasy books for kids just getting started with chapter books. Highly recommended.
These books hooked my son on reading

My son was a reluctant reader until my sister (a 3rd grade teacher) recommended these books. My son finished the set in a week and now is a voracious reader of much harder material.
I inquired at a children's book store about similar books and was referred to "Ricky Ricardo." The book-marm liked them better because they don't have so much potty humor. I think it was the potty humor (and lot's of it) that hooked my son.
Finally got my 7 year old interested in books!

I LOVE Dav pilkey! ALL of his books are the best! My 2nd grader didn't like reading until we discovered these and the Ricky Ricotta series! My favorite if Super Baby though! It is gross and hilarious! I am just happy that he is reading by himself for pleasure now!
