fun for all ages

I purchased this book for two 11 year old neices about 6 months ago, and they love it. as beginning knitters, making a house scarf is a large project (it took each of them about 3 months). they are huge fans of the books and knitting items from the movie brings the magical world a bit closer.
I finally broke down and bought a copy for me. My dh wants a scarf, and I love the clock blanket.
Not as magical as I'd hoped....

I'll be honest: I was much more excited by the IDEA of this book than the actual book itself. Although I typically crochet, I often look to knitting books for inspiration. True there are some very good patterns which, along with Alison Hansel's fun comments and obvious adoration for Harry Potter, do make this a worthwhile purchase, yet I really wanted something more, well, magical. The styles are pretty basic (striped scarves and whatnot)...I don't know, maybe I just wanted to see more kitschy "fun" items befitting the Harry Potter world. There are a golden snitch ornament (without wings) and an Errol stuffed toy, but mostly it's sweaters and scarves...and nary an intarsia house logo in sight. Maybe because the book is not really sanctioned by JK Rowling some things couldn't be included?
All in all, I do like the concept of the book, and it does seem to be well written. It's just more practical than magical.
A word about "free" patterns
2007-10-16
I know that many of these projects are available for free online (in fact I have already knitted more than one of them!) but I wanted them all in one place, and I could now throw away all the tattered pieces of printer paper I have roaming around my knitting bag :) Plus, there were a few I didn't have and I was happy to get! I think the reviewers complaining about the fact that they could get these patterns free online are being a bit insulting. I'm happy to be able to put a couple of pennies in the pockets of these ladies who took the time to create and share these patterns with the public. It's so sad that in our society of instant gratification that we all seem to think that we are entitled to anything we want and heaven forbid we have to pay for it. I recommend this book for any fans of the potterverse.
Nice projects inside

I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and I ordered this book to create some of the items from the movie. This book has some excellent items in it to make, from Dobby's socks to wizard robes, to scarfs, and blankets. However, it isn't a book for those who do not already know how to knit. I had to go and buy another book to learn how to knit first. But overall, I love the book. Easy to read and through instructions.

I haven't had the chance to make anything from this book yet, but I'm looking forward to it! As soon as I get the needles, I'll be knitting away.

My two nephews birthdays where looming and I was thinking of getting them both Harry Potter Wands as gifts when I ran into this one, so I bought it on a whim. Boy was I glad I did, Wizard hats, wand cases, robes, stich witchery bags, Oh My!

This book is full of surprisingly exact knitteds from the movies. Unless you want a strangely pointed hat there aren't too many knitting skills for any of the items. Very plain knitting with traditional styled knits.
Fun and entertaining

I got this book for a friend for Christmas, and ended up buying one for myself, too. The projects aren't terribly inventive, but if you're looking for something fun for a Harry Potter fan, this book has loads of projects that range from taking a couple of hours (the Weasley sweater ornament), to taking weeks (Mrs. Weasley's clock blanket). I'm looking forward to making some of the projects in this book!
