Too expensive and not enough quality content
2008-01-20
This book is too expensive for the content. Was this book designed exclusively for the classroom? If so, perhaps that's part of the price-gouging. For the person looking to self-study: there are better quality books to study from. For the student who is forced to buy this book as part of a class curriculum: I would encourage you to not write in this book nor open the CD included because it's not a book worth keeping. You'd be best off re-selling the book as soon as your class ends.
I lost respect for the author because:
-Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 worksheets have repeated questions
-Chapter 2 has too much filler disguised as "exercises".
-Not written for the musician who has never been exposed to theory. For example: circle of fifths could be better explained. So could the idea of simple/compound meters and triplets/duplets. Also, at the very beginning, much time is devoted to the different C-clefs yet there's no mention of tenor clef (as G-clef written with the small "8" underneath).
I suspect the author got lazy and was offered a sweet publishing deal that takes advantage of students who have no choice but to buy the ^&%$# textbook because of class requirements.
Great, but too expensive

As a professor in a community college, I love this book and think the format is so useful! But I am switching to a lower-priced one simply because our students can't afford it. The new edition, I am sure, is even more expensive. And buying a used one, you risk the near certainty of having an imcomplete book. Too bad.
So many ways to improve

(...) It is pretty straight forward and easy to understand, BUT there are no answers for the exercises in the back of the book. My professor never asked us to turn in exercises from this book so the exercises were useless since there was no knowing if you'd done them correctly. If there were answers in the back and a companion CD with examples I would keep the book, but now that my class is over I'm taking it back for 1/2 of what I paid for it and counting my losses.
Too expensive

Why is a workbook so expensive?!?! This is out of range for many students like myself. I will have to forgo the class at the Community College because I can't afford the book.
