Editorial Review
In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.

No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.”

In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:

·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

·The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too.

·The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.

In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:

What is colic?

Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?

How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes?

Can babies be spoiled?

When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?

How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?

Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.

Shower Present 2008-08-01
We make swaddling blankets and give a copyof the book as baby shower gifts or as welcome baby home. It makes for a happier baby and parents.

I slept for the first time in weeks 2008-07-26
My son is not a colicky baby, but he isn't a sleeper either. Although I tried to put him on a schedule he just wouldn't sleep during the day, and he'd only sleep for a few hours at night. When I tried to lay him down for a nap he would shriek, as if in pain. Many of my friends ended up putting there babies on there stomachs to sleep but I just didn't want to do that. The only way he would sleep for an extended period of time was if he was in the swing, but I felt guilty for letting him sleep in the swing, as if I was getting him addicted to something. Last night after reading some of this book I swaddled him, put on a cd of ocean sounds and put him in his swing, he slept for 8 hours (he's 7.5 weeks old). He's also been taking naps between feeding for the first time! I don't worry that he'll be addicted to the swing(because I know he's in the 4th trimester as explained in the book) and I'm now able to do housework and spend time with my husband. This book is absolutely wonderful, and I only wish that I had read it sooner.

If your baby has colic.... read this book, it really is life changing 2008-07-24
This has got to be the absolute best baby/parenting book I've read yet. I really wish I had known about this book 3 months ago when my son was born... it would have spared me from the confusion, heartache, insanity, and self blame that seems to come with the territory of having a colicky baby. Even now though this book has helped me a lot - if it wasn't for this book I would still be spending my afternoons and evenings miserable because my little guy is tired and cranky and won't take a nap. This isn't a gimmick or something that takes tons of practice before it starts working - it really works from the get-go! Most importantly though it is such a huge source of support for new mothers, who often find themselves in a conflict between what their instincts tell them and what others tell them, and in the course tend to start doubting themselves and their abilities more and more.

Where is it? 2008-07-14
I ordered this 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten it! I've sent a message to the seller but still nothing!

A must-have for parents! 2008-06-17
As a mother with a colicky baby...this book was a blessing. I highly recommend it and will be giving it to all new parents!

The Happiest Parents on the Block! 2008-06-12
Do yourself a favor and buy this book if you are a parent of a newborn (up to three months) and would like to sleep through the night. My son was fussy and would cry in the early evening every night. I tried the methods described in this book (the 5 S's) and he would calm down right away. I found that swaddeling him at night with a snug swaddle (I use the kiddopotamus swaddle me blanket which worked like a charm- Kiddopotamus & Co 100% Cotton Knit SwaddleMe® Circle Bear - Small)and he was sleeping through the night at 2.5 months. This book is wonderful. I appreciated the author's perspective that you can not spoil an infant and embracing the idea of the "4th trimester" did the trick to calm him down. I recommend any new parent read this book before your baby is born. They say they don't make baby manuals, but after reading this book I have to say I disagree.

Good to have but figured a lot out on my own 2008-06-10
I don't agre with everything in this and I discovered most of the things on myown but I love how he describes babywearing as a good thing and gives several methods to treat colic--they work! My son's colic was because of garlic in my diet though--we've proven that multiple times contrary to what he believes

this book was a blessing 2008-06-01
we received this book as a gift and we used it constantly as a reference for the first three months of our baby's life. dr karp keeps his method so simple and easy anyone can use this book without getting frustrated or feeling like they are doing it all wrong.

i would definitely recommend this book to new parents and parents who are expecting again. his method is just so simple it would help anyone who has tried everything or has done it all before because every baby is different. there is something in here for everyone.
