Editorial Review
In the very near future you will find yourself dining on Snow Flurry at the famous Weatherbee's Diner. Everyone will be there—Bob and Bossy Casey, Medusa's sister Sally, both of the Appleton Twins, and Mr. Andy Mandolin singing "Biscuits in the Wind." Remember him? You will also meet Angus, visit the silly Soggy Circus, and as soon as the moon is out (unless there's an eclipse), you may even glimpse a Tiny Baby Sphinx!

Until then, here's what I recommend: listen for flamingos, write some haiku, then take a ride in a Barnacle Built for Two. Sound good to you?

Love it! 2008-02-08
A friend of mine gave me this book for my son. He's only 2 1/2 but he LOVES it, and so do I. The poetry is lighthearted and silly for him but written well enough to be pleasant for me, too. I believe it will encourage his love of poetry and books. I'm going to buy a handful more for my friends!

Flamingos and verse 2008-01-20
I wasn't quite sure what to make of this book when I first picked it up. It has quirky pictures and poems/narrative in rhyme. It sometimes spoofs on the holidays such when children hear flamingos on the roof in December instead of Santa Claus. Flamingos on the Roof isn't the easiest read either, hence the suggested reading ages of 6 to 12. Over all, I thought it was uneven and unsatisfying though I do get the appeal of getting kids to read poetry. It was an okay read and we've read it several times since.

Delightful 2008-01-20
The author uses different poetic forms and takes something familiar then twists it into something new. This is a delightful book that any child would love and truly enjoy.

These are cute and silly rhymes that any child will get a laugh from. Subjects range from peas to a "soggy circus" to Poseidon's kelp toupee.

The way the author uses language, tongue twisters and rhymes is amazing. It teaches children how to have fun with language.

Highly recommended.

I LOVE CALEF!!! 2008-01-16
You can not go wrong with any CALEF BROWN book. He has been a favorite of mine for years. The books are creative, colorful, funny and my kids LOVE them.

FUNNY AND CUTE 2007-01-12
Great book but I expect nothing less from Calef Brown. This was the last to add to our collection and our daughter loves them all.

A very fun read! 2008-05-30
We love rhyming stories, and Flamingos on the Roof is no exception. I read a great review about Calef Brown in Wondertime magazine and was not disappointed. Whereas Shel Silverstein is a bit gruesome and crude, Brown's poetry is simple yet creative, fun and silly, and all around great reading with your little one. My 18 mo old loves the iambic pentameter rhythm of the rhyming, and the illustrations are wacky and fun (think Rev Howard Finster naive art). I would love to see him create a longer story someday, as the short poems go by too fast. I'd recommend his books for all ages, little ones and adults.

Wonderful!! 2008-03-17
I'm a 62 year old widower who heard Scott Simon interview Calef Brown on NPR. I bought it on a whim and it is everything they said it was....funny, catchy and edgy. Buy it for your grandchildren but keep it at your house to read OUT LOUD when you are taking life too seriously.

What a delightful book for all ages 2008-02-23
I got this book to read to my five-year-old and she never tires of it, but I think people of all ages will love Flamingos on the Roof. It can be read in small chunks or all the way through. I can't wait to see more work from this author/illustrator. The language is a bit intricate, so if you're buying this for a child to read on their own, I'd say the book is on a third- or fourth-grade reading level.

Great poetry 2008-02-22
I heard these poems read over NPR one Saturday morning and enjoyed listening to them so much that I decided to buy three sets for each of my grandchildren. Just delightful to listen to and I hope it will encourage them to read and write more poetry!

FLAMINGOS ON THE ROOF 2008-02-22
I first heard of this book on NPR-"Saturday Edition", and had to buy for my personal library. It's intended for 4th graders, but I've gotten it for my adult friends-for their own pleasure and to read to young visitors.
It's beautifully composed, uplifting and lyrical. Calef Brown is gifted.
