Guitar Fretboard Workbook Works
2008-08-28
This is an excellent overview of the guitar fretboard. Very helpful and easy to follow. I learned a lot in a short amount of time.
Just what I was looking for.

The best way to learn something is through doing. This book does exactly that and is an amazing resource. If you want to really learn the guitar fretboard, this book is definitely for you.
Get plenty of "AHA!" moments

This book is, as the title suggests, a workbook. You study, complete excersizes, practice. It connects bits of theory and helps you understand how all the elements of the fretboard work together, from tuning to scales to complicated chords. This book teaches what I have been trying to learn for ages- how to "navigate" the fretboard. Because of this book, I can identify any note on the fretboard, or create scales up and down the neck without getting lost (which is the key to soloing). If you follow the instructions and use this book the way it's intended, you will actually understand music theory on the guitar in a very practical way. I cannot overstate the importance of the knowledge this book will help you gain. You will have plenty of "AHA!" moments when you work on some excersizes and then realize how vital the knowledge is that you just gained. This book is superb and will improve your playing and understanding, guaranteed!
Great

I took lessons for about 5 years, and I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, took a couple year break, and got back into it. I had learned the scales and did a lot of improvisation, but I was never able to easily find the note I was looking for without searching for it by ear. After reading the 1st chapter or 2 and doing the exercises I am easily able to find the notes anywhere on the fretboard, I wish I had read this book about 10 years ago.
Best book for me at this stage of my musical knowledge

I have made it through chapter 8 and I am learning more than I have during the past 20 years of playing. I wish that I had done this sooner but better late than never. This is a great book to go through before attempting to start the Music theory book by Tom Kolb, which I will start next.

Navigate the guitar neck better than ever before with this easy-to-use book! Designed from Musicians Institute core curriculum programs, it covers essential concepts for players of every level, acoustic or electric. A hands-on guide to theory, it will help you learn to build any scale or chord on your own and unleash creativity. No music reading is required.
Good book for students to use

I have some of my advanced students use this book as a way to reinforce the fretboard and music theory.
The best of the 3 fretboard learning books I reviewed
2008-05-12
I bought Sololow's Fretboard Roadmaps, the Fretboard Logic SE book, and this workbook at about the same time. Of the three, this one was the most useful and best written. It would be even better if they released a software version so you could "drill" practice on the patterns. But for $15 I think this is a great resource and should be one of the first 5 things new guitarists put in their "library".
Prepare to spend some time with this book

There's no substitute for knowing what you're doing when you are learning an instrument. This book will take you a long way but you must be willing to put in some time with it. Personally, I find it almost addictive with it's worksheets. My son calls them puzzles.
Figure on taking a year to work through the material. Getting in a hurry will cause confusion and you'll just have to back up and start again. I find that for me I absolutely have to finish each worksheet several times before it really takes root. My routine is to spend maybe fifteen minutes or so a day in the Guitar Fretboard Workbook and then go on to my regular practice.
This is highly recommended. If I had found it years ago I wouldn't be struggling with my playing now.
refret job done at home!

This very helpful book provided me confidence to tackle a partial refret on my 12 yr old washburn D34S (wideneck: 12 fret). It's a scary moment when you start pulling frets out of the board, believe me! I will say that no book is completely thorough in describing such work, but this is one of the better resources I have found.
