Only Half the Story...Get The Paperback Too!
2007-03-27
There are two versions of the book. This board book edition is great for infants and up to age 2, since they are still chewing on books. However, it only tells half the story, to the point where the lowercase letters make it up the tree and fall out. The story ends there just fine and it is a good stopping place, since a board book can only be so many pages.
I was surprised to find this out when we saw the larger paperback book edition at our doc's office. The story continues with the aftermath of the fall, where the capital letters rush in to help their lowercase offspring untangle from the big pile. It is quite hilarious, with the letters sporting various slings and bandages, etc.
I would get the board book for the baby, and be ready to pick up the paperback later on. My three-year old is ready (most days) to handle the lighter, longer book. He loves taking his fridge magnet letters (which come in both upper and lowercase) to act out the story.
A great, colorful read.

My fourteen month old grandson loves this book, a shorter version of the original that my kindergarden students adore. Anything by Bill Martin and John Archambault is excellent for developing early literacy.
Only half the story

It would have been 5 stars if it had been the whole story. -- I have 2 children (3&6); for them "sharing" is a work in progress. So, occasionally I will purchase "companion" items for parallel play when they have trouble sharing. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is their favorite story. I had purchased the paperback of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom for the 6-yr-old & bought this board book for the 3-yr-old (he is still working through the concept of "touch nicely".) -- While the book is nice & sturdy & has all the same beautiful artwork & words from the 1st half of the original story, it is still -- only the 1st half of the original story! And, of course, my boys favorite part is the 2nd half of the story with "stub-toe e" & "loose-tooth t", etc. So -- it is a little disappointing as it's incomplete, but what there is is nice. And if your toddler has never read/heard Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, it's a great introduction! -- As both my boys already know & love the story... If I had realized the difference before I purchased, I probably would have purchased 2 copies of the paperback & a roll of clear packing tape to repair the 3-yr-old's copy as needed!! :-)
Excellent book for toddler and preschooler

I discovered this book from an episode on Blues Clues. My 4 y.o. memorized the book in 2 days, and my toddler loves to read the letters on the book. The rhyme is well written, and you can make the "Rhythm and beat" as fun as you want while reading it to your child. I highly recommend this book!

Great introduction to the ABC's, as well as a loved book for your young reader. My 5 year old loves to read the book, and my two year old loves me to read it to him. Great book for the early years.
Awesome book!

This book and DVD are a must! My kids love it and we sing the Chicka Chicka ABC song all the time. I now buy it for gifts and the kids just love it!
doesn't flow
2007-10-21
I heard this was a great book, but it was disappointing. There's no flow to this book at all. I kind of felt like it was missing something. . . I now realize that there's another version that is more complete. I do not recommend this board book at all. Honestly, not even for babies. Just because it's a sturdy board book to chew on isn't a good enough reason for me!
Not like the original one

I had really liked the original version of this book which is meant for slightly older children. So I got this for my 14 month old daughter. She is least interested in it although she loves books and has many favorites. I didnt like it much either. There is no rhythm and the text doesnt flow very well. In fact, the last few pages just contain a bunch of alphabets thrown in as if in a hurry to finish the book. There are better books out there!
A new baby "basic"

Have to have this book if you have a newborn. Scholastic has a really fun DVD that adds a fun carribean inspired tune to the book too. My children have LOVED this book since they were very young and still respond to it.

I ordered this book knowing that I liked the content, but I was very excited about the bonus shaker....my 7 month old son didn't let go of it for a day....the second time he dropped it from his high chair it broke in two, which was sad. it was very cute for the day and 1/2 that it lasted.
