VB Express Startup

Getting this product is worth it just to avoid the hassle of downloading all the various separate files you need to run the various express editions included on the CD. Not a bad start-up guide either but don't expect more.

Most Unobjective Presentation Method

When you read this book ("Microsoft Visual Basic 2008", by Patrice Pelland), you feel that you must try your best to be very patient, for the subject matter is prsented in a too much worded way. This is so because the subject matter is not explained in an objective way, for there are too many words that say just a little bit. Instead of phrasing the subject matter with the right amount of words, the auhor prefers to use as many words as possible, no matter what is needed.

This kind of paraphrasing, or overwording, tends to make you impatient, and you start abhor what you are most interesting in, that is to say, you begin to avert what you want most.

In this way your main objective turns unobjective, and because of this I do not recommend the reading of this book, if you really want to learn how to prgram in Visual Basic

Considering the previous comments that this was written based on beta code and the fact not mentioned that you can download the VB studio software for free from microsoft why bother buying the book. You can also download SQL server, C++, .... for free. Save your money and spend it on a better book without the software. So if your buying this because of the software you should re-evaluate your rational. Software available for free so your really buying just the book.

Build some things but not all

This book was written based on Beta code.
I found that some things worked and some didn't, with absolutely NO troubleshooting guide to help explain why some of the code in the book gives errors - even when using the software supplied on the CD.
Some examples worked OK - some created seemingly unfixable errors. This is extremely frustrating since, if you are like me, you will assume that you have done something wrong when really it is a Microsoft problem!

Little help!

I bought two books to help me with a small VB program I needed to write. I have a little conceptual knowledge of programming from a long time ago.
This book is written specifically for VB Express Edition. I opened the book and was lost in the first two pages. I already knew it was not going to be the answer. I switched to VB 2008 by Michael Halvorson and completed my program with little difficulty. A few times I went back to this book, but could never figure out what I needed. I found much greater help online than in this book. I am an educator. I know there are people who know their subject matter and others who can teach their subject matter. Patrice Pelland's Build a Program Now may be technically correct, but a beginning programmer will not be helped by this book.

Not quite what it claims to be 2008-05-16
I purchased this book on an impulse thinking that it covered Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition only to find out later (on page viii of the Introduction) that the book was written based on the prerelease software. Specifically, it was based on the November 2007 release candidate version of VB 2008 Express. It didn't mention this anywhere on the front or back cover of the book.

I have read the first few chapters and it appears to be an okay book considering that its a MSPress book. Still, I do not care for books written based on beta or release candidate software because something always ends up different when the software is finally released. Burying this information on the 8th page of the book is bad form.

Surprisingly good for a MS book 2008-04-07
I've tried several MS press books in the past and found them not really very useful. I'm from the Java side and familiar with the concepts and approaches for .NET, but have never used any Visual Studio based products directly.

This book was perfect for my needs. I was able to get the Express C# package up and running quickly and build out the projects in the book in about a week. I thought the level was perfect for me. Just the right mix of hand holding and intro to most of the general concepts. I think MS did a great job with this book and also with the packaging of the Express Edition software.

For a very small investment (dollars and time) one can get a great feel for the MS development environment with this book.
