Editorial Review
A delightfully silly, good-natured parody of the recording phenomenon Chant and other works that put Gregorian music on the charts, Grunt is a book and CD set that combines Sandra Boynton's inimitable way with farm animals and a satirical sense that comes deliciously out of left barn.

In a far-off valley live the obeisant Domoinkan Pigs of Snouto Domoinko de Silo. Here, twelve times a day, these simple swine grunt the unadorned, ethereal music of Pigorian Chant (translation included). For occasions from the first mealtime (Op-slay ime-tay. Et's lay eat-ay. Um yay, um-yay.) to Nox Animaliae, when they're joined by all the animals in a harmony that dates back before the time of Caesar Hogustus, the pigs chant.

Listen, look at Sandra Boynton's delicious illustrations, and laugh. It's what to play whenever you're feeling disgruntled.

Sooooooo-eee; ore-snay! 2007-10-19
I recently discovered this hilarious CD and songbook. The quality of singing is excellent, and the lyrics (both in Latin and pig-Latin) with translations are silly and fun. Best of all, you can play the music anywhere, even at work, unless you can't stop yourself from guffawing.

This CD will be best appreciated by adults, and children who've begun to study Latin at school.

Very Funny! 2007-06-04
A friend sent "Grunt: Pigorian Chant" to us because we raise pastured pigs. It is hilarious! My kids had a blast with it and I read the (long) intro as well as the words of the music to my three and a half year old daughter. We all enjoy Pig-Latin and Ubby-Dubby as well as my son is studying real Latin (we homeschool) and I know Latin. This all made the whole thing that much more poignant. This is a very serious (sus-ious) out-take on classical music.

Clever, Not for Toddlers 2007-02-11
There's no denying that this is clever, well-written material. But our toddler, who loves the other Boynton book/CD combos, can't really get into it. What's more, unlike the other discs, this one is somewhat annoying as background music.

Serious chant aficionados may disagree, but I think it's best to plan on sitting still and listening to this with the words in front of you to really appreciate it. But you probably won't need more than one or two listenings before it gets tiring. The concept is clever, and the execution is very good, but the joke wears thin pretty quickly.

Parents should also be aware that this isn't really like the other Boynton material (such as "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Rhinoceros Tap"), and it's not really music for kids. They might learn to enjoy it (and maybe they should), but it's definitely not in the same vein as those other more simple and tuneful works.

The kids I bought it for seem to think it was okay but I didn't find it as entertaining as her other music books.

A Must Have for Chant Lovers 2006-08-25
Hilarious spoof of Gregorian Chant. If you are a music history buff, this is a must for your collection.

Wake with a smile 2008-05-14
Orsnay, Orsnay....I love these songs but especially this one that encourages my husband to get up on a Saturday morning and take me out to breakfast. The singers are excellent. If you don't listen closely you don't realize it is Pig Latin.
Have fun!

Makes you say "What?" 2008-03-28
I spend the next few hours snickering every time I listen to this spoof. I have sung in semi-professional chorales for years, and have done my fair share of chants and singing in Latin. The styling is impeccable; the verbal twists are knee-slappers - Malapropian Latin 101. If you don't understand or like gregorian chanting or music sung in Latin, take a big pass on this book. However, for those of you who have ever sung in Latin, you gotta read the libretto. I dare you to not snigger as you read the translation of "Hic una moo, ibi una moo, ubique una moo moo." (Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo, moo). Methinks you will not do much ore-snaying.

Time to a listener had better mean zilch (grin) 2008-02-27
This may be the first product I have ever seen (anywhere!) for which every point of view expressed by the reviewers has validity. If you have even a passing background in Latin, Gregorian chant, and the Catholic Mass (along with considerable concentration and tolerance of Pig Latin), you'll probably find this send-up of CHANT very funny. If you lack one or more of these, then you'll likely wish the tempis would fugit faster, or else you'll get up to carpe the diem elsewhere.

This CD is really satire, not comedy, and therefore not to everyone's taste (either for adults or especially for children). I too wished the send-up of "Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O" had a citation of that venerable tune (preferably in a church mode). Peter Schickele's P.D.Q. Bach wouldn't have missed the chance, precisely because the latter is comedy rather than satire. (But then, Boynton & Co. do what they do seriously and on purpose; P.D.Q. did it - in his Missa Hilarious - by irreverent incompetence.)

That said, the straight-faced tone of the art and the music (leavened with Boynton's inimitable humor) has just the right touch for the subject, right down to the bells chiming the hours. Now if we could only persuade the author to do an album about the glories of chocolate...

PIGORIAN CHANT 2008-02-08
I HAVE GIVEN MANY COPIES OF THIS LOVEY WORK AWAY TO FRIENDS. I NEVER LISTEN TO IT WITHOUT REAL JOY. IT TOOK SUCH A LOT OF TIME FOR THIS TO BE PRODUCED. BUT IT WAS A LABOR SO VERY WORTH IT. IT PROVIDED A REAL JOYFUL EVENING FOR A COLLEGE COURSE ON THE HISTORY OF MUSIC.

Boring! 2008-01-02
This CD was kind of boring. Didn't interest my daughter as much as Sandra Boynton's other works.
