Should be required reading!
2005-04-12
Julianne Dueber's THE ULTIMATE HIGH SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDE should be required reading for all high school freshmen and their parents! While sensitive to sensitive issues, it also "cuts to the chase" in a no-nonsense way, frequently using wit to make a point. It's an easy read that both parents and teens will enjoy. I wish it was the textbook for a class at my school!
patronizing, fake sounding
2002-07-04
This book is superficial and preachy. It is filled with stock answers and suggestions which turned me off and turned off the people I showed them to. It's hard to believe that teenagers would want to read beyond the first page.
I also found the language elementary, and the grammar occasionally incorect. Answers to common questions were surfacy. This is a great title with very weak back up in the text. I work in a school as a counselor and have a teenage child, and I'd never give this book to anyone who really wanted the lowdown.
The Ultimate High School Survival Guide

As a sophomore in high school, I find this book very helpful and informative. It helped me survive my first year in high school and gave me tips on how to get good grades, handle social situations, and have time for activities. This book covers a wide variety of issues inside and outside of school. Many of my questions were answered and I used it to help develop new strategies for homework and tests, as well as how to get along with others. I have recommended this book to several of my friends who were struggling to adjust to high school life, because I know it has helped me. You can easily tell that the author has taught high school and truly understands what students are going through today to live up not only to the expectations of others, but to their own expectations of themselves.
A great book for middle school & high school teens
2001-07-26
This book is great because it gives teenages crucial information that most parents assume their children already know. Teens today often find themselves in impossible, confusing situations and don't have a clue how to cope. This book addresses the typical teen issues by providing clear information, thus enabling teens to find solutions for their own problems.
Great book for students who read it.

I will be a high school junior this school year. Last year I participated in a program that helps to prepare middle school kids for high school. A couple of weeks after the program started one of the parents gave me this book. I was convinced that I knew everything there was about the stuff that goes on in high school so I wasn't going to take the time to read it. One day I was desperate to find something to talk about other than myself and that would promote discussion so I turned to this book. I found the real student situations and stories very helpful in my meetings and used the book the rest of the year. At the end of the year I recommended that the students buy the book. I know that most won't but it is good to know that a book like this exists because it answers many of the questions that students either don't want to ask or don't realize need to be asked. I think this book probably answered some of my questions even though I don't know what those questions were.
Outstanding Book for Adolescents
2000-03-08
This fabulous, comprehensive book is a must see for high school students and their parents. Each chapter contains valuable information pertinent to the high school student's successful transition through adolescence. As a high school counselor, I strongly recommend this publication for students who may need some guidance in high school and college planning, as well as academic concerns such as math anxiety, testing, reading, and time management. In addition, a variety of key adolescent issues, including getting along with teachers, stress management, and other teenage traumas are discussed in an easily digested format. Julianne Dueber's educational expertise and phenomenal connection to the teenage perspective provide a powerful resource for high school students. Well done!

If you are a kid or have one, this is the book to help you figure out what's happening. Parents or students can change their lives by applying the information in this book. Ms. Dueber had done a wonderful job of presenting complex issues in a charming way. Get it, use it and live happily everafter.
A "Must Buy" for all High School Students
2000-02-02
This book thoroughly addresses all aspects of the high school experience, from academics and athletics to social pressures. It is incisively written, at a level which any high school student should be able to not only comprehend but also not easily put down. Its author, who appears to be a true advocate of adolescents, displays a keen understanding of the forces which render adolescence difficult. Given the experiences of the most recent decade, the availability of such a composite of succinct information and assistance should be considered a "must" for high school students. I cannot imagine a high school library without this paperback.
A comprehensive effort
2000-01-24
With wit, compassion, and charisma, Julianne Dueber has assembled a comprehensive body of research on potential and real problems which teenagers face in today's uncertain social world. The Ultimate High School Survival Guide is extremely well-organized, colorful, creative, and easy to use . The author imbues this tome with not only her own insight, but the shared wisdom of many young people who have written vignettes. Some hard-learned lessons are candidly and lovingly revealed Itself a community project, The Ultimate High School Survival Guide is a gift of coherence for junior high and high school communities, from this caring former high school teacher. I will recommend it to the teachers I instruct in social foundations of education.
Dueber's Guide does it all...

Dueber's Guide is an interesting and practical piece which reflects a broad range of experiences and insight into adolescent behavior. Parents and students can profit from her perspectives, and as an counselor, I have found it to be a valuable resource.
