not my type of movie..
2008-08-14
I got this movie because I wanted to see the role in which Gabrielle Anwar is apparently famous for. Im probably the only one who would do that but I did, and maybe thats why it was a major let down. She was a pretty insignificant character to the movie and her scene lasted at most five minutes. The movie itself was for lack of a better description very 'movie like'. Al Pacino is a bitter old blind soldier who is trying to fulfill his last wishes and live it up in the big city before his planned suicide. Again this is just me but overall it was a dissapointment. I have yet to be impressed with Mr. Al Pacino.

This is a truly remarkable movie. Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell are the perfect duo. It will make you laugh, cry, and even have you rooting for the guy that no one really likes anymore. Great purchase!
What A Wonderful Movie.

Without giving away the plot line. If you're a Pacino fan. This film is a must see. His character & story line are so strong. He doesn't need a leading lady to bounce off of. He carries it all on his own. It's not over-the-top Pacino grandstanding. It's a touching portrayal. It made me cry. Thanks Colonel.

Al Pacino at his best
2007-10-17
This has become my favorite Al Pacino movie, and was one of the first HD movies that I bought after purchasing my new 65" High Definition plasma TV. It is a most unique story, and it will touch your "funny bone" as well as your heart. The HD version will bring to life your favorite scenes, such as when Pacino dances the Tango with the beautiful brunette. Instead of being an outsider looking in, you'll feel as if you are actually sitting at a cocktail table by the dance floor as Al Pacino dances so gracefully. This title is a must in anyone's HD-DVD library.
Hoo-Raaaah!

Look, Al Pacino is over the top and chews up every scene like a doberman with my slippers, but it doesn't matter. SCENT OF A WOMAN is a grand vehicle for Pacino's antics; the story has meat on its bones, and the ending will leave you pumping your fist.
As Army Lt. Col. (retired) Frank Slade, Pacino plays one ticked off hombre. Mad at the world (due to being completely blind), Col. Slade is ready to call it quits. . .but first, he wants one last fling--over Thanksgiving Weekend, of all weekends--in the Big Apple. Yet he needs a pair of eyes: He finds them in young, peach-fuzzed Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), an earnest student attending a New England prep school in the business of preparing its young skulls full of mush for entrance to Harvard. Charlie has a few problems of his own, the biggest one being he's on the hot seat because he knows who the culprits of a mean-spirited prank are--but he's not wheeling to squeal on his classmates.
So the Colonel and his young companion have spellbinding adventures in New York, culminating in a dramatic confrontation as Charlie tries to thwart the Colonel's date with a .45. Meanwhile, there is a camaraderie--a rapport--that develops between the two characters; Charlie's naivete, his gleaming innocence, affects the curmudgeonly Colonel. It overpowers, even changes him. . .so much so that Slade comes to Charlie's aid at his school's disciplinary hearing, where the retired Colonel gives a rousing speech, and subsequent dressdown, to the institution's snobbish dean (James Rebhorn). The entire scene is one hundred and fifty percent riveting.
Heck, SCENT OF A WOMAN in its totality is riveting--despite Pacino's constant rants and pity parties, which grow tiresome. On the other hand, his portrayal of a blind man is utterly and completely convincing. You'll also notice a very young Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays a preppie classmate of Charlie's. Hoffman went on to say this role launched his career; and SCENT OF A WOMAN ain't a bad way to do that.

Great Transfer to HD-DVD!

This was always one of my favorite movies and was glad to see it finally come out on HD-DVD. The transfer was great, providing crisp clear visuals. Soundtrack transfer is ver good as well.
Two Perspectives
2007-06-19
There are basically two ways to see this film. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees it as an inspiring, uplifting story with a feelgood ending. The fan of realism and originality sees it as a predictable and formulaic cliche. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees Al Pacino's performance as colorful, facinating, and larger than life. The fan of realism and originality sees Pacino's performance as over the top and lacking in any subtlety. The fan of classic Hollywood sees Pacino's closing speech and the ending of the film as inspiring and heartwarming. The fan of realism and originality sees the speech as a lame moralization and the ending as well as Pacino's character transformation to be a phony and unrealistic sellout to popular sensiblity.
If you are looking for the familiar crowd-pleasing kind of entertainment that Hollywood has always been trusted to provide, you will definitely find it here. But if you are a fan of artistic cinema you will wonder how Al Pacino could win an oscar for a role like this in a film like this and somehow not win for Godfather II. In fact, you will probably wonder what Pacino, as a dedicated method actor with such a great vision for playing complex and interestingly subtle characters, was thinking when he played this role.
