Editorial Review
Hollywood legends Marlon Brando Frank Sinatra Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine (from the original Broadway cast) are dazzling in this Frank Loesser (How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying) masterpiece unleashing a "spectacular song-and-dance show that's loaded with entertainment" (New York Journal-American). Featuring hits like "Luck Be A Lady" and "A Woman in Love" this smash film version of one of Broadway's most popular musicals is guaranteed rip-roaring "four-star entertainment" (New York Daily News). The slickest big-time New York City gamblers Sky Masterson (Brando) and Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) can't resist making or taking a bet on anything. So When a pretty missionary (Simmons) sets up shop in the neighborhood Nathan stakes a grand that Sky can't seduce her. But all bets are off when Sky falls madly in love in this romantic musical spectacular that sets the Big Apple afire with excitement!System Requirements:Starring: Marlon Brando Jean Simmons Frank Sinatra Vivian Blane Robert Keith Stubby Kaye Sheldon Leonard Regis Toomey and B.S. BEWARE THE BUTCHER...THIS RELEASE HAS BEEN ALTERED 2008-03-11
For those uniformed potential buyers...note that the picture/aspect ratio for this specific release has been cropped (I've done identical scene comparisons with this deluxe release and the previous edition). In addition, the (2000) release is mislabeled (i.e. 2.35:1) and is actually presented in a 2.55:1 ratio (the original theatrical release format). Conversely, the deluxe edition (is labeled 2.55:1) and because of cropping, has been altered from the picture's original aspect ratio...in effect displaying a 2.35:1 image. The cropping issue has also been noted by other various reviewers, therefore confirming and/or lending credibility to this issue not being an isolated event.
In summmation...the product has been misrepresented. With this release, one does not get the complete picture...literally. I returned my deluxe edtion for a refund and will stay with my (2000) version, until the studio(s) or those responsible for a legitimate "deluxe" edtion will "do it right."

Guys & Dolls, but not their music 2008-02-25
Excellent copy of the musical, but be sure to realize the music is "from the era," not from the movie.

Doesn't get much better than this 2008-01-29
As movie musicals go, this is one of the best. It looks good. It sounds great. The performances are first rate. Brando was a surprising choice to play Sky Masterson, who sings and dances, but the performance is fine. Ditto for Jean Simmons, who is not known for her singing or dancing. Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye deserve special mention, but then they are old pros and they do what one should expect from old hands at the genre.

This is one to watch again and again.

JOSEPH L. MANKIEWICZ, OPUS 14 2008-01-19
**** 1955. Written for the screen and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, GUYS AND DOLLS is an adaptation from Guys and Dolls: The Stories of Damon Runyon. The antepenultimate Samuel Goldwyn production earned four nominations for the Academy awards and two Golden Globes. Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are never ridiculous in this production and Frank Sinatra does his job allright. A curiosity in Mankiewicz's career.

"The companionship of a doll is a pleasant thing." 2007-12-29
Guys and Dolls was regarded as a bit of a disappointment when it came out in 1955, but it's surprising just how much fun it is. Damon Runyon's elegantly stylised dialog is complemented by the wonderful production design of a stylised New York that's as unreal as the characters while at the same time not overstated enough to make it purely an exercise in style over substance. The score is a real killer, with more great numbers than any musical deserves, and Michael Kidd's wondrously energetic and imaginative choreography is amazing without ever overwhelming the film. The casting is pitch perfect even if Brando isn't a great singer and Sinatra hated the film because he wanted to play Sky Masterson instead of good old reliable Nathan Detroit. The two and a half hours just float by.

While not exactly overloaded with extras, the new featurettes on the special edition DVD are at least an improvement on the barebones original release.

Guys and Dolls 2008-07-11
This is a true classic. Greta actors, wonderful script, some of the best Broadway music in one show. Another must see for the "musical" enthusiast.

Guys & Dolls DVD 2008-07-03

BEGUILING ! 2008-05-12
This is the big, beautiful musical with the perfect casting. I didn't know that legendary Brando could do such wonderful performance in a movie such as this one--he really was a cinematic genius. Sinatra, equally talented, was not to be outstaged--he was hilarious! And the dolls--Simmons and Blaine--were brilliant acting partners; the rest of the crew were simply oustanding. Highly recommended!

A CLASSIC 2008-04-15
WHAT BAD CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE? IT IS AS I SAY A CLASSIC. I LOVE THE MUSIC AND THE WHOLE STORY.

Guys and Dolls--a good as ever!! 2008-03-25
The movie "Guys and Dolls," starring Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons and based on characters developed by Damon Runyon, is timeless. And in the words of Barbra Streisand as she described her teenage crush on Mr. Brando during one of her concerts, "Hello, Gorgeous!!" Beautiful songs, clever and clean humor, a happy ending--everything in a musical you could ask for!
