An Awesome Series
2008-06-30
The Sisters Grimm series is an awesome series. When my mother first told me about it and I saw it, I thought it wouldn't be that cool so I didn't buy it. But then I got it from one of my friends and I read it and it was AWESOME! That immediately made me want to read the second book, so when me and mommie went to the bookstore and I saw the second book there, I really wanted to get it. Now that I got it and read it, I immediately want to read the third book.
I really liked how surprising it was when it seemed like some of the people at first I thought were going to be the bad guys turned out to be the good guys, and some of the good guys I liked turned out to be bad guys. An example was Principle Hamelin, when we thought he was helping Rumplestiltskin but then it turned out that Rumpelstiltskin tricked him, so Principle Hamelin became good again.
Entertaining for the whole family

This series of Sisters Grimm books by Michael Buckley has characters familiar to adult readers and to many kids, too. The characters come from fairy tales and from other children's literature, with this author's own spin on them. The books are as entertaining for an adult to read as for a child. My nine year-old and I both read them very quickly and did not want to put them down.
We also enjoyed the Harry Potter series, but after reading these books find the Potter books to be much longer and wordier than these. These are quick reads, yet have a lot of action in few pages. We definitely recommend them.

My girls, 8 and 10, thoroughly enjoyed this book. They are always begging for 'just a little bit more' every time we have to put the book down. They love making the connections to the fairy tale characters that they are familiar with from other stories.
The Best of Sisters Grimm EVER!

The second book in this thrilling fantasy series introducing Sabrina and Daphne's school, filled with strange mysteries. Tantilizing secrets about characters are revealed, an evil plot is discovered, and Sabrina and Daphne, as the fairy tale detectives, must find out what's going on! This fast-moving, magical, epic tale will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Enjoyable and clever

I've enjoyed reading "The Sisters Grimm", and recommend it.
I particularly appreciate the "Wizard of Oz" references.
One section had me laughing out loud, an unusual occurance (outside of a Stephanie Plum novel). Even today, two weeks later, I still smile thinking about it. Without revealing anything, I'll just refer to the ink "drawing".
...get the series, and read it!

In book two of the series, the Sisters Grimm start school at Ferryport Landing Elementary. Daphne’s lucky enough to get Snow White for a teacher—she loves little people—but poor Sabrina’s stuck with Mr. Grumpner and a class of mildly psychotic sixth graders. When Mr. Grumpner is found hanging in a spider’s web, it is up to the Grimms to find the Everafter who did it. If only Sabrina can get over her distrust of all fairy-tale folk. But how can she trust those who just might be responsible for the disappearance of her parents?
Great Book

Mix a bit of Shrek and Harry Potter together and toss in a female lead and you find yourself with the rather addictive Sisters Grimm series. While I started with the second book Buckley takes a few pages to catch the reader up that the Sisters Grimm are descendants of the Brothers Grimm and as a result of the fairy tale characters being persecuted in Europe they now live in a small town in the USA; however, a spell has been cast and the Everafters must remain in Ferryport Landing and coincide with humans. Specifically with this volume of the series, strange happenings begin to occur at school when some teachers wind up dead. The valuable lesson in this children's book (and a good one): don't allow stereotypes and bigotry to guide your views and opinions. The one entirely annoying aspect about this series is that Buckley does not differentiate between fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, fables, nursery rhymes, etc and thus never explains how, for example, a trickster king from mythology lives and is restricted to the town.

The Sisters Grimm: The Unusual Suspects is the second book in Michael Buckley's delightful series about two sisters, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. Following their parents disappearance, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm were shuttled from an orphanage to a series of horrible foster homes, homes they ran away from.
The sisters were surprised to learn that the grandmother they thought died, was really alive. While they (at least Sabrina) didn't want to live with Granny Relda, they settled in and immediately learned that their ancestors were the Brothers Grimm (of the fairy-tale Grimms) and Ferryport Landing was not a typical town. The village residents are human and Everafters (fairy-tale characters who fled Europe's persecution).
Sabrina and Daphne didn't want to attend school, but a visit from the cruel child protection worker, Minerva Smirt changed their propensity to playing hooky. It was either school or return to New York. School seemed the lesser evil.
The sisters start school and learn that the principal is the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Daphne's teacher is the beautiful Snow White. The girls soon find that things are a bit 'off' at school. The children seem tired, irritable and some are downright mean. And the teachers, well, one is a cruel bully.
After the first day of school, one of the teachers is found dead. He was tied to the ceiling in a monstrous spider web. An investigation is begun. There's a monster loose and if the case isn't solved, it could have dire consequences for Sabrina, Daphne, their family and Ferryport Landing.
Will the arrogant mayor (Prince Charming) mend his ways? What will happen to Mr. Canis and his nighttime problems? Will Snow White be strong? Will the secret room and Mirror help the girls find their parents?
I love this series. It's exciting and fast-paced. The characters are delightful and the suspense aspect will thrill middle readers.

I teach 4th grade and my students absolutely LOVE this book. I have never seen a class so excited about a read-aloud in my life! They want to read all the time, leave lunch early, read during brakfast and any other free time we may have just to see what happens next. There is so much suspense built up in this book that there is always an interesting place to stop reading so they are excited for the next day. This book is an excellent example of good writing for children to model. We constantly predict what will happen next. To make things even better, I really enjoy the book as well. I have already purchased all 4 that are currently out and anxiously await the remainder of the series. This is my new read-aloud for upcoming years! Warning: be sure you have the 3rd book in hand before you finish this one because it ends with "To be continued...", which made my entire class scream! We cannot wait until the 3rd book arrives!
