Editorial Review
A perennial bestseller, this definitive guide to all legal, economic, and financial aspects of the music business better than ever in its revised, thoroughly updated new edition. This edition addresses the implications of MP3, the Copyright Term Extension Act, union treatment of digital music, and more.

As this "bible of the music business" moves into its 40th year, the book's expanded scope addresses challenges and opportunities of a new century, including:

MP3 record duplication, Internet sales, and cybercasting
Digital record performance rights for artists and record companies
New markets emerging from WIPO and GATT treaty enforcement of copyright protection against counterfeiters and bootleggers
Greater reliance on major labels, further merging of powerful companies, and reduced record distribution by independents
Revised markets opened by the European Economic Union and other consolidations
The impact, both positive and negative, of growing motion picture and theater investments in the music business

Kind of informative and has a few good tips 2008-02-09
Has some insight about how to get put on, but not much more than I already knew about.

Good, Hard Studying 2007-06-01
You'll need to buckle down to study this one as a text & not a reference book. If you don't have the attention span for a dense textbook, you'll wind up using this book as a reference text. If you're looking for something easier to study from, get: "Everything You Need To Know About the Music Business" by Donald Passman.

A crucial text that goes way back to its first printing in 1969.

Definitely the Definitely Guide! 2007-05-18
I definitely gained some insight into the ins and the outs of the music biz. What a Great read!

If you want to win, read this book 2007-01-16
Music is an art form, selling it is business and a ruthless one at that.
If you want to get ahead, you must know the rules. This book is the real deal not magical thinking and wonderlust. Get it and get ahead.

A classic!!!!!!!!! 2006-07-03
I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. Its one of the best books your ever buy on the music Industry. I have two copies to reference one for my home and one for the office. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.

Comprehensive 2006-02-24
A must have for musicians. It could be a little better structured and organized, but generally speaking I am able to look things up quickly.

Good Reference book. 2006-02-05
This book is o.k. can be better. I recommend the Steps to Stardom DVD which actually take you behind the doors of the music industry to gain information from current CEO's, A&R's, Producers, Engineers, etc. Good Reference book to have on the shelf!

Gets Better and Better - Ty Cohen Author of www.Important-Music-Industry-Contacts.com 2006-01-09
This books gets better with each new edition.

It includes contract forms, licensing facts, copyright guidelines, and live performance facts and information for the peformers that need the information the very most!

This book comes highly recommended, do yourself a favor and use it to achieve your dreams of being a success in the music industry.

The best money you will ever spend.

an important book for understanding the music business 2005-01-04
This Business of Music is a very important and comprehensive book to aid one in understanding the music industry. However, I would recommend using the book merely to gain a strong knowledge of the history of the music business, and then to follow up by reading related magazines and journals, since things are rapidly changing. My other advice would be for anyone reading This Business of Music to understand that it is a history and that the reader should keep an open mind to creative, alternate business models that fully take advantage of modern technology. I realize that This Business of Music is updated periodically, but it still seems to be the case that the technology and the norms change more rapidly than the time between revision and distribution.

NOTE: I accidentally rated 3 stars, when I meant to rate five, but the system, for some reason, does not allow me to edit my rating.
