Serious yet entertaining... 2007-06-01
Most people who buy this book will do so as a text book, so there isn't much choice. However, if you are looking for information to "intervene" with an athlete and help produce better results, this is a great resource. The author is a respected sport psychologist and he keeps the information and strategies organized and user friendly. He backs it all up with real experiences with real clients who he's helped or attempted to help in terms of sports. Quality text.

A Handbook for Good Professional Practice 2000-11-07
Intended for an audience of sport psychology professionals, this book is also extremely appropriate for anyone interested in addressing the practical needs of athletes. This might include the parent, coach, even fan into looking deeper into the psychological components of performance.

The book is well organized into multiple applied settings that explore models of intervention and special issues in counseling athletes. Specialists in sub-fields of sport psychology tackle sensitive areas in each chapter, for example, children in sport, working with a coach in a team setting, gender issues, providing services to student athletes, caring for injured athletes, over-training and burnout. Like other similar books in the field, (such as Williams (Editor) (1998) Applied Sport Psychology: Personal Growth to Peak Performance (3rd Ed)), 'Sport Psychology Interventions' gives a basic literature review for each chapter covered but also uses case studies taken from the experiences of well respected sport psychology professionals to demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions.

As a trainee sport psychologist, I found the format of the book particularly helpful because of the applied nature. Writing from both the educational and clinical perspectives, `Sport Psychology Interventions' is well supported by research, exploring many areas of ethical and intervention issues that any practicing professional in the area are likely to face. From this standpoint the book is an invaluable resource that can be developed to facilitate much discussion about delivery guidelines and `our' boundaries as health care and performance enhancement professionals. A worthwhile addition to your library.
