The Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom: Easy Ways to Adapt Learning Centers for All Children

Excellent book filled with strategies and illustrations and plenty of "ah-ha's or why didn't I think of that?" adaptations to use in the preschool classroom. Very helpful. Highly recommended.

Outstanding resource for prechool therapists and teachers

This book is a gem--just perfect for occupational therapists, parents or anyone working with special needs preschoolers. The book is organized by various diagnoses as well as specific learning situations found in most preschools-circle time, snack, various centers, etc. The numerous classroom adaptations suggested are outstanding. I work in Head Start preschools where the teachers have limited experience and training with special needs kids. I can't tell you how helpful this book has been.
An incredibly useful tool!

As a teacher in an inclusive preschool classroom and a student of special education, I found this book to be exceptionally useful. The authors provide detailed suggestions for adaptations that can be made in all the usual activities of a preschool environment, such as circle time, art, sand and water table, blocks, dramatic play, snack, and fine and gross motor centers. To make the book even more valuable, the authors discuss a number of different disabilities and suggest appropriate accommodations for each activity according to the type of disability. Autism/PDD, ADHD, Orthopedic Impairments, Developmental Delays, Visual Impairments and Motor Planning Impairments are all addressed. For the most part, the proposed adaptations are easily made and quite successful. Illustrations are provided as well, which may help guide a teacher in implementing adaptations of classroom materials and structure. The design and presentation of the book is reader-friendly and easy to follow, and the tone is one that is quite sensitive to the needs of children with special needs.
