Beyond Time & Pitches

The Mind's Ear... Was recommended to me by master tubist Sam Pilafian, as a book that might push the reader past merely playing the right notes to the knowing and understanding of music from a more personal perspective. As children we are constantly encouraged to develop our imaginations. Then as we move through middle school and into high school, markedly less emphasis is placed on imagination, with much more stress placed on knowledge and information. This is equaly true for those students who study music. More often than not, technique, tone and musical knowledge is pushed hard and musical imagination is frequently overlooked all together. Adolphe's book addresses this void, offering great exercises aimed at developing the musician's imagination. Buy two books - one for yourself and one to loan out to friends!
An EXCELLENT resource for all ability levels

This book is one of the best sources I have found for creative ear training excercises. As a student of music for many years, and a music teacher, I have tried many approaches to training my own ear, and to helping my students train theirs. The ideas in this book not only help to develop skills, but also make an excellent warm-up activity to a longer session. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their listening abilities.
