Editorial Review
Many years in the making, this comprehensive cookbook delivers more than 1,200 foolproof recipes for classic American family fare in a clear, accessible style. Beautiful step-by-step photos illuminate every conceivable technique from chopping shallots and skinning salmon to cutting up a chicken and tying a roast. In fact, just about anything you want (or need) to do in the kitchen will be explained in these pages in the test kitchen’s approachable, no-nonsense voice. In addition, the recipes will keep you busy (and your friends and family happy) for years to come since we’ve included hundreds of easy weeknight dishes (like Skillet Lasagna and One-Pot Chicken and Rice), company and holiday-worthy dinners (like Beef Burgundy, Roast Leg of Lamb, and Fresh Fruit Trifle), dozens of menus, shopping tips, equipment ratings and more.

A cooking tutorial between two covers, The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook is the one and only basic cookbook you'll need, covering every course, from appetizers to desserts, and including chapters on breakfast, sandwiches, sauces and condiments, and beverages. Friendly test kitchen tips accompany nearly every recipe and point out either where you might go wrong or a special technique or ingredient that makes the recipe successful. Helpful charts (like a primer on steaming vegetables or cooking grains) and Cooking 101 pages (covering topics like brining, cheese, and crudité) make this a reference unlike any other. Bound to get America back into the kitchen again, this is a family cookbook for generations to come.

Near Perfect 2007-12-05
Bought this for my wife because she enjoys the show. We have tried many of the recipes in it and have not disliked a single one. Some of the recipes we tried are now family favorites, hands down! Not only are the recipes superb, but the instructions are easy to follow and the product recommendations and substitution suggestions push this cookbook far above others. The only faults lie in a few difficult to come by or expensive ingredients as well as the far too flimsy pages (which they have improved in the newer addition). If you enjoy cooking: buy this without hesitation.

MY WIFE LOVES THIS!! 2007-05-23
I bought this for my wife for Christmas. I have never eaten so well!! She has learned even more about something she already loved to do... cook! Best cook book I've ever seen!

first cookbook I've ever enjoyed using 2007-04-30
I have been cooking for a few years now, and everytime someone gave me a cookbook I'd look at it, get bored or frustrated by the layout, and ultimately I'd forget about it. Why would I waste my time pouring over a book that might not even have the recipe I want when I could just zip over to [...]and get a peer-reviewed recipe that was just what I was expecting?

This book makes it easy to find a recipe by type of food in case you don't know 'exactly' what you want to make, gives you inumerable suggestions for variations to personalize the dish or ingredients to substitute if your pantry is low, and has always had any recipe I've needed. I go to this book first anytime I need to cook/ bake/ whatever--and so far it has always been delightful.

Great for a beginner.... 2007-03-07
I am always looking for a good cook book. I love to test new recipes as well as spend the quality time cooking and baking with my children. So, when I read the reviews for this book, I thought, WOW I have to have this one! However, upon receiving it, I was disappointed at the content. It is very much for the beginner and the recipes...not exactly up my alley. I bought this before Christmas and still have yet to make one thing out of it. I am not saying "Don't buy it." Just get a little more info about it if you are not the beginner cook. I am planning to use one of the recipes soon though, so who knows, I may change my mind.

Only one you will need 2007-02-21
I only wish I had bought this book years ago. I would have saved us a lot of money as well as shelf space in our kitchen. This is the only one you will need. We now give these out to newly weds as wedding presents. Nothing we have cooked has been a disappointment. Very good buy....

Blows Betty out of the water 2006-12-02
First, let me agree with another reviewer and note that the pages are extremely flimsy and if this were to be an heirloom quality cookbook it would need much sturdier pages. It does bum me out that they chose such cheap, low quality paper for this high quality cookbook. Every recipe I've tried has been insanely delicious. This is definitely what I was looking for as a twentysomething, living away from mom and her homestyle goodies. This cookbook allows me to make delicious food. Granted there are no reductions or roulades involved, it's simple everyday foods. Just the basic cooking bible. On cheapie bible paper. If the paper were better, this book would be perfect in every way.

Best Cookbook EVER! 2006-11-06
Everything in this cookbook is delicious and easy to make. I especially like that they have directions on how to prepare every recipe ahead of time, when possible. I liked it so much I got it for my sister too. You won't be disappointed.

America's Test Kitchen...the Best 2006-11-06
Hands down, one of my favorite cookbooks out of a very substantial collection. Easy to read and understand, offers numerous pictures to help you along. The tips and advice are excellent. I loved the different reviews of products tested to determine what works best. The cookie section has produced some of my best ever! Also explains the difference in products and why one might work better than another. You feel that real effort went into this book to make you the best cook you can be. Highly recommend this one!

My favorite Cookbook 2006-09-16
I recieved this cookbook for Christmas last year, and it has quickly turned into the most used in my kitchen! Everything I have made from this book has turned out incredible, especially the meatloaf recipe. I also recomend the Cook's Illustrated cookbook, which includes an amazing Macaroni and Cheese recipe.
