Apparently God wants you to inflict pain on your babies 2008-09-18
Apparently, this author hasn't read the New Testament and isn't familiar with terms like "forgiveness" and "tolerance." Basing his advice on the Old Testament (which also advocates stoning people to death, something one would have thought the coming of Jesus put paid to), this horrible example of a parent, Tripp, advocates inflicting pain on BABIES! We're talking about kids who can't walk and aren't really talking yet and this person thinks that if they "disobey" by struggling against a diaper change or stiffening when you want them to sit on your lap, they should have their bare bottoms hit hard enough to cause them to cry (poor colicky babies will apparently be beaten regularly, as they often stiffen due to discomfort). And then, if that isn't weird enough, you're supposed to hug them and if they don't sweeten right up but keep crying, you're to keep hitting them until they stop crying. Sounds like a recipe for a frustrated parent who is going to go over the top trying to beat a child into smiling. In the church I belonged to, we adhered to the New Testament, and considered the kinds of punishments meted out to children and adults (stoning, beating, etc.) in the Old Testament to have been washed away when the Jesus brought the new law of love and forgiveness. If you're into Old Testament living, this book is for you. If you are a child of Jesus, it's definitely not.

highly recommened 2008-08-30
I highly recommend this book to those parent who want to raise thier children in a godly home. The 'heart' is so important. This is a must for learning how to discipline your children. The section on spanking does seem a bit extreme, however.

old edition 2008-05-19
I ordered the book as shown in the picture. However, I received an old edition without any notice.

Great 2008-03-27
WE received this book before our first child was born from my husband's parents and we have recommended this book over and over again. We actually have lent it out several times and are trying to get together with another couple to do a study together. My oldest is now 9 and we have two more ages 7 and almost 6. This book does a great job emphasizing the core responsibility of parenting - not just focusing on external good behavior but getting down to the heart issues that come out in our behaviors and helping our children realize that the most important thing is to be in a right relationship with God - all parents want their children to be happy and successful and happiness and success are found in a right relationship with God. The book has training principles and goals for different stages of childhood. I've read it several times and need to read it again as our children are reaching new phases of childhood and we're now dealing with more character issues. All of our parenting is to be based on Biblical principles and Ted Tripp does an excellent job of showing parents how to apply those principles in their parenting. A great book that gives you a lot to think about!

Excellent book! 2008-03-24
My pastor uses this book more than any other. He teaches the classes as well as counsels with it. It is excellent material.

Shepherding a Child's Heart: Parents Handbook 2008-02-22
This book goes with "Shepherding a Child's Heart". It help to further understand how to discipline a child.

Good tips 2008-02-11
Read some and watched the matching video series with our New parents fellowship group. Lots of solid parenting principles and advice, mostly for 6-18 yr olds I'd say. I feel Trip is a better writer than public speaker. Also look into the Ezzo's materials. Excellent from PreBirth-on. Toddler Years, and Growing Kid's God's Way (sounds pretentious, but brilliant principles). Together, you will have enough parenting things to work on for a long time, but blessed children which are a pleasure to be around. Ignore the far Left's anti-discipline evolutionary psychology hogwash, like don't spank. We should respectfully fear God (in a good way) and avoid evil; kids should respectfully fear their parents and being disciplined, and so be obedient for their own good.

Excellent companion to the book 2008-02-08
This parenting handbook is an essential to glean the most from Tripp's book. We absolutely love the book and appreciate Tripp's style of writing and instructing. We've read other materials along the same lines (teaching obedience and disciplining accordingly with the goal of allowing your children to see their sin and need for the Savior), but other's writing styles have been more "harsh" (or not as easily received by us). I read the book almost a year ago and began implementing the techniques and approach but found myself weak in consistency. Our family was raising support to be missionaries and then moved. We found ourselves a few months ago really needing to get on the same page in the area of parenting/discipline. Our new church was leading a study through the book so we joined. We are now going through the parent's handbook along with reading the book again and I'm gleaning 100% more this time. We highly recommend the handbook as it has you do a lot of looking at your goals, evaluating your current home environment and TONS of Scripture study, which is most critical and influential!

UnChristian Cruelty 2007-12-22
I don't know which is more digusting, that someone would advise treating children so cruelly in the first place or that they would smear Jesus Christ and Christianity by doing it in Christ's name. Not only is the sadistic advice in this book alien to the teachings of Jesus, it is also alien to everything that modern science tells us produces happy, healthy, obedient children. Read the Bible (all of it, people!), read modern science, but avoid this vicious quackery like the plague! Shame on Amazon for selling a book like this and shame on them for removing reviews that are critical of it.

Most Important Biblical Parenting Book Available 2007-12-04
There is no comparison to this book. This dispatches the pop-psych, child-centered, rather than God-centered approach to parenting. It begins at the place where all behavior stems, the heart. The heart must be changed before lasting behavioral and attitude change will take place. Let's not continue trying to manipulate our children's behavior, but rather to address the heart in a biblical and loving way.
