Selective Mutism: Help for the teacher 2008-07-29
I found the book to be very helpful in understanding selective mutism and it offered good suggestions for the teacher. It was a little pricey for such a small book and at times it was repetitive. It did however, offer enough practical insight and suggestions that made it a good purchase.

Excellent read for parents 2007-11-21
This book was very helpful to not only myself and my SM daughter, but also to her teachers and guidance counselers. Really helps others understand SM and how to deal with it in a classroom setting.

share this with your child's teacher 2007-03-20
excellent and specific ideas for reducing classroom anxiety...short enough to share with your child's classroom teacher...

Some good tips, but overpriced 2007-01-02
This particular booklet has some good tips and was the most useful of the 4 I purchased by this author. Still, for the price I would recommend investing in Maggie Johnson's The Selective Mutism Resource Manual instead. It is also pricey, but worth every penny.

I also highly recommend Helping Your Child With Selective Mutism: Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking which is very useful and reasonably priced.

Perfect Explanation 2005-12-16
This book is excellent in defining what a 'Selectively Mute Child' is and goes through. Because of this book, I understand what my child is feeling when he becomes anxious. I not only learned that my child is 'Selectively Mute', but I also learned that I have been all of my life when I thought I was just 'painfully shy.' A reviewer made the comment that this book was overpriced. Maybe when they wrote the review they forgot that there is no set price on what parents pay to help the children that need us. Besides, part of the proceeds goes to a foundation called "Speak Out for Our Children."

Overpriced booklet 2005-05-22
This 28 page booklet filled with large text and graphics leaves a lot to be desired. Most of what is written is already information posted throughout the internet. The author's other books rate about the same "overpriced booklets". All can be read in about 3 minutes. Save your money!

Review from a special education teacher 2004-08-30
I am a special education teacher and I have searched high and low for a book that would be beneficial for me, my student, and the parents. After reading this book, I realized that this book is a necessity for anyone who comes in contact with a selective mute child/person/student/relative... ECT... I have gained many techniques and information from this book. Prior to this book, could not find any decent books relating to the selective mute except this one. Not only is this book "decent" it should be mandatory! If you do not purchased this book you will be missing out valuable information that the doctors don't even know!

Do not hold my child back just because she won't talk. 2004-05-13
I received a call from my Kindergartners teacher saying they wanted to hold her back because they could not assess her because she would not talk in class. I asked them to send me the assessments and my daughter did perfectly. I had to fight to make people understand that my daughter is bright and not willfully being defiant. She has an Communication anxiety disorder that most likely is genetic. I went to my DR. with information I received from the SelectiveMutism.org site and got an assessment from my Doctor. I then took this assessment to my childs school and was able to put a 504 plan in place. I also requested that they order this book, and the others written by Elisa Shipon-Blum and hope they will work on understanding this disorder.

In my search to find the answers to why my middle child acted so differently than my other 4, and not receiving any answers, I began my own quest. I read books that explained temperments and it helped me understand my daughter. All of the books such as, "Raising your Spirited Child", "The Dificult Child", "The Strong Willed Child", "The Explosive Child" all had the same quality/traits that my daughter was exhibiting. However, it did not address her not speaking in certain situations. I believe all these books can be tied in with Selective Mutism / Communication Anxiety and other Childhood Anxieties. I don't know why my daughter has all these other symptoms such as low sensory, low frustration levels, etc., but after reading the forums at selectivemutism.org I have found that most of these children with SM have the same characteristics. Many have been misdiagnosed with ODD & Autism, among other things.
