Heartless ideas
2008-05-15
Reading this book made me feel sad that such ideas are still prevalent in our society. The book gives instructions for parents on how to spank their children with an instrument and encourages parents to inflict pain on their children as young as little babies. The author believes that every child is born sinful and that sin is bound in the heart of every child. The book tries to convince parents that spanking is an act of love and that spanking hurts the parent more than the child. Spanking teaches that force is an appropriate behavior and it creates fear in the child. Inflicting pain on children is a heartless act and this is a heartless book.

Have you noticed how there are generally only 5 star and 1 star reviewers? It is because this is a truly wonderful book for every parent (especially mothers) out there. The 1 star reviews (in my opinion) are written by people who are trying to promote their books and agendas. That being said, this is a great book for any Christian mom to read. It was insightful without being superior. I believed while reading it that Mrs. Plowman genuinely desires to help parents raise godly children based on godly values. How often that gets lost when people decide to focus purely on spanking. This book is NOT about spanking, it is about focusing your training around a real and meaningful relationship with God. I myself do not believe that spanking is the lone method to be used in child-rearing. And, even with an incredibly independent (dare I say defiant?) 2 year old daughter, spanking is NOT the only method of discipline I use, and according to this book, nor should it be. This book has helped me to allign my focus and has given me helpful ideas and tips as well as encouraged me to turn again to Scripture for guidance. In three words...BUY THIS BOOK.
Thank you, Ginger Plowman, for having the stones to write this book!!
Incredible Biblical Worldview on Childrearing and Discipline

I love this book! It was just what I was looking for, really! I knew I was doing things wrong, but I didn't know what or how to change. This book put me in the right direction, gave great tips, and follows God's Word to the letter. If you are not a Christian, or you are and don't read your bible you may hate this book. I've been dying to know how to get inside and probe my child's heart. Truly His Word inspired her words on the pages! Parenting is so difficult, and in this world that goes against our Lord and Savior Jesus, it is easy to be fooled into lies. I love how humble she is, always pointing to the bible, and stating she doesn't have all of the answers.
Biblical and hysterical

Loved, loved, loved it! This book is great to point the reader to the scriptures to see what God has to say about Biblical parenting. I like that it is God's opinion, and not Ginger Plowmans. And it is an easy and hysterical read. She includes some really humiliating examples. Every time I hear a mother/father counting to three I want to hand them this book.
Christian discipline

Only someone who is incapable of distinguishing between "beating" and discipline would recoil at a book like this. The nonsense of the Spock generation dies hard. And in the meantime has done immeasurable harm to children who grew up without knowing where the limits rightly are.
New parents, buy this book.

Bad Title - Great Book

- Biblical parenting
- Tosses worldly parenting methods (such as counting to 3) out the window
- Gives tons of Scripture references for following God's instructions for parenting
- Gives parents ways to help the child evaluate his/her own motives for behavior, encouraging children to keep motives and behaviors in line with God's instructions for living
- Helps child move from pleasing parents to pleasing God - preparing them to be independent Christians, outside of the umbrella of parent's control and moving to an awareness of accountability to God
- Appendix includes discussions on becoming a Christian (false Christian vs. true Christian), leading your child to Christ, and praying for your child

This book is a wonderful resource for parents. It focuses on using scripture as the basis for discipline - lots of practical and easy to use tips. Definitely worth the read.

Usually when you have a book written from a true biblical perspective and it gets an average 3.5 stars, you will find that they are all "fives" and "ones". Many of the comments in the one star category are from those who did not read the book, but hate Christianity in general and there comments are clearly their commentary on their anti-christian bias vs their review.
I found the book to be very valuable, the teaching was biblical, well founded, loving, and effective. It is very important that both parents are on board and read the book. The rapidity with which it works when consistent, loving discipline is used is amazing.
balance approach to parenting

This is a great book about how to raise your children in a loving way. Some of the reviewers of this book appear to have vendettas against spanking--apparently they would write similar reviews about the book of Proverbs.
Don't miss this book. If you are struggling with disobedient children, this book will give you hope.

I always counted to three, used time-out. No longer, my child listens for the most part and really seems to respond to the techniques used in this book. I've already lent it to a friend, and have a few waiting in line. A must read.
