This Actually Makes Sense
2008-10-08
I love this book! After reading it cover to cover I thought, finally a health and diet book that not only makes sense, but isn't a typical unrealistic "diet"! I really appreciated the authors explaining the science behind the concepts so that I can actually understand what my body is thinking and reacting in order to manage my weight and health. There are actually over 800 references. I borrowed the book to my mother and interestingly, one of the first things she asked was where the recipes and grocery lists were. I told her that is exactly what makes the book so great. I think we've all done more than one diet that cleaned out our fridge and cupboards of the foods we've eaten our whole lives, only to quit the diet within 2 weeks, throw the "diet" food away and then re-buy our food. This book taught me how to incorporate my favorite foods into a healthy lifestyle - with timing of meals being most important. Both my mom and I have lost weight and feel better!
WOW!

I think I finally found the holy grail! I have been studying nutrition topics for more than 15 years, and this book really breaks down the details of the hormones involved in weight loss/ weight gain. They have done a great job gathering all the research together and deciphering it. I like how they show that simple vitamin and amino acid combos can help reset things. What I do not like is that they push their own products. They will say you need one version of a vitamin that is "more bio-available" and they just happen to be one of a few people that carry that product for a really high price. Amazing that. I am still experimenting with the nutritional supplements to see how well their advice works in the practical world. But for the science part of it I am very pleased.
Excellent!

I gave it a four because I'm not finished with it. It is very interesting and I am learning so much.
Well researched, but more than a bit snobbish

The authors are only willing to help the chosen ones. Mother didn't nurse you when you were born? Hopeless. Took some amphedimines in college while studying for final exams? Hopeless. You get the idea. So, if you're one of those perfect people who lived a Susie-Creamcheese life, this is the book for you. But, if you're so perfect, why would you need it? Gave them 2 stars for research alone; wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends.
A Must Read

Hi,
The book is as awesome as I expected. This is a must read book for everyone who is living now in present day stressed up times.
The concepts are clearly explained and the possible implications and expectations.
I would like the author be consistent with the supplements suggested in the book and that are advertised on [...] and a link to any outdated information in this edition of the book to the present research.
Otherwise its a amazing book !!!

This is the only weight loss book that "worked" for me when I actually followed it. I have had a hard time losing weight even when I followed other books religiously... This book explained so many of the reasons why I had weight that seemed resistant to going away! The book is packed with info on how to deal with your own individual health issues - or how to avoid them in the first place!
This was going pretty well for me - and then I traveled quite a bit in the spring, summer and fall and it broke my routines. The principles are not that hard to follow - but you do actually have to follow them most of the time for it to work - Lesson learned. I decided today that I wanted to get focused in this way again...and that is why I came back here - where I bought it. This book has also helped another friend who had also had many problems trying to lose weight. signed Mary K.

I enjoyed this book and found it to be very informative and helpful with problems that I and other family members have been having. Would recemmend this book to people who are trying to loose weight and have tried every diet or not to read this book.
lots of science

The science in this book is very technical but fascinating if you like that kind of stuff. (I do) All the research is footnoted to many many new studies. The exact mechanisms of your hormones and relationship to food/fuel are disected at length. Who knew fat cells have their own voice in metabolism? A powerful voice? The diet itself is straight from the 1950s. No snacking! No large meals! no eating after dinner! less carbs, more veggies & no desserts! You must exercise! This advise is not rocket science here. This said, I have followed the diet for two weeks after losing 20 lbs on Atkins then South Beach. I was at a plateau for 5 weeks. I have lost 3.5 more pounds on this diet and my skin looks wonderful. Dieting is very hard on my complexion, I get grey, troubled skin and dark eye circles along with a smaller size. I have 7-10 pounds to go, so I am not obese or unhealthy as the examples in the book often are. Mr.Richards gets a bit preachy and heavy handed at times. He seems to assume we are all fat stupid processed junk-food eating machines with a cola addiction and no exercise at all. I think this is a sound lifestyle diet but you will not be able to do it 100% if you have a social life. The rigid 3 meals only, spaced exactly 6-7 hours apart is easily derailed. (Friday happy hour?, Good friend has baked a specialty when you drop by to return a book at 3 PM? Valued employee offers you special homemade native Honduran health drink of rice, nuts & cinamon at 10:30 AM?) Still, over all I feel great and am doing the plan about 80% of the time. I hope the science of letting the liver, pancreas, and other organs "rest" between meals is as good as "6 small meals every 3 hours to keep the metabolism stoked" was for the last 10 years. If you like trying new diets, try this one. It does work. The added health benefits to persons with problems I don't share may be the deciding factor. Mr. Richards does promote his own pricey suppliment line heavily in the book. I might try it, but a 20 day supply is $113. This is a couple grand a year!
Way too much info

I read. A lot. I love all books, especially health related books and this one made sense of everything I do, why I do it, and my habits. Its like the book was written about me.
the down side, the info was too over whelming. It was all worth reading, so I forged on, but I had a head ache by the time I was done. the info in this book is, to me anyway, very important for it reflects so much of me, but I really wish is was easier to read. I know he came out with a second book, but I'm afraid to buy it. I'm hoping its a easier to understand version.
