The Realms of the Gods 2008-01-23
I have read almost all of Mrs. Pierce's books and LOVE her characters. You will get hooked.

Charmingly predictable... 2007-08-13
...and as I wrote regarding the Trickster series that is just fine. Plot twists are clearly telegraphed, bad guys are quite bad. Good guys are very good. There is one exception to this trend in this series that I thought was a nice touch. The Immortals series gets off to a rocky start. The first volume has a bit of excessive exposition aimed at younger readers and when handled well that is fine, but in this case it is a bit ham-fisted in places.

As other readers have noted the country bumpkin routine gets somewhat tiresome in the first volume, but things pick up and accelerate through the series. This seems to be par for the course for Ms. Pierce. Usually books in a series tend to go downhill as they progress, but that is not the case here.

For adult readers these are bite sized morsels. I was able to plow through the third volume in an evening. For younger readers I suspect these are paced about right.

I do wish these "quartets" came in one or two volumes.

About Daine and Numair 2007-04-13
Concerning the age difference between Daine and Numair, remember that this story takes place in medieval-like times.

Throughout history, it has been typical for adult men to marry girls who have just reached puberty. It wasn't sicko. In those times, it made good sense. A woman's job was to have babies and keep house. She could do those things at 13. A man's job was to provide for the family. He could do that better if he was older. Practicality mattered more than romance. Of course, Pierce's heroines are wonderful role models for modern girls.

Like other readers, I would like to see more of their relationship. There isn't enough in the (wonderful) Protector of the Small series. Maybe there will be more books.

I am pleasantly surprised that prudes have not complained about Daine been nude throughout so much of the book.

You'll be surprised and blown away! 2007-03-31
Daine is now a young lady and is still Numair Salamin's student. While Daine and Numair are in a battle with a new immortal called a skinner they're swept away into the Divine Realms where gods and immortals live. In this place Daine see's somebody she hasn't seen in years and meets someone new that she wished she'd seen before.

While they are happy not to be dead they know that they are needed down in the mortal world where Ozorne and his creatures are coming against Tortall. They need to find help and get out of the Divine Realms before it's too late for Daine knows that Tortall's fate rests in her hands.

In this book you'll find Romance too! Which is something a lot of people will enjoy. If you've been reading the series you'll probably know who Daine's going to fall in love with but you'll still be excited. This is a wonderous book so read 'THE REALMS OF THE GODS'!

Action, Romance, Magic...what more could you need? 2007-01-05

The Romance is a wonderful addition! 2006-11-25
'The Realms of the Gods' is an excellent read to everyone! Especially those who love a bit of romance here and there! Daine known as the Wild mage has fallen into the divine realms where she meets many interesting gods and goddesses. I won't say who because it would spoil a lot of the book. There her and her teacher Numair travel and try to get out. Dispite the trouble in Tortall they are not scared to go back infact they want to help which all good heros should do. If you like action, excitement and romance try THE REALMS OF THE GODS!

The Realms of the Gods 2006-06-22
Tamora Peirce has outdone herself with the Immortals Quartet. As the final book, Pierce has fully completed her saga of Veralidaine and Numair. The reader will come to a full understanding of pressure put on top of the leaders of Tortall. Pick it up and I swear on the Great Mother Goddess you won't want to put it down.

Not my fav. Immortals book 2006-02-25
In this book Daine has to find and destroy the skinners, but in doing so, she endangers her life, badly. So badly that her parents, and the badger god, have to pull her into the realms of the gods. There she finds out who her dad is and what her mother has become. Then she has to find a way to get back to the human realms. She goes to the Dragonlands for help, and Skysong's grandfather ends up doing the job. The get back safely and... Well I don't want to give away the ending. But this was a pretty good book, but honestly, just a bit obvious. Sure she developes a relationship(with whom I am not telling), But I saw that from the first book. And sure, she finds out who her dad is, and wha her mom is, and sure, she kills...some one(I'm not telling that either), but I saw that long ago. I think that no series is worth reading if you don't finish it, but this is still not my absolute favorite. (personally, I think that Wild Magic was the best.)I guess I could say that I've read better, and I've read much worse.

A disappointing end to an excellent series 2006-01-31
Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite YA authors -- I own and have reread "The Song of the Lioness" series and "The Immortals" series countless times.

Let's be frank: I *love* Daine. I think she's creative, intelligent, compassionate, imperfect -- everything a person wants in a heroine, really. And I like Numair. I enjoy every aspect of that pair's relationship as student as teacher, as friends, and, I hoped, as lovers.

However. I don't know how, but Tamora Pierce managed to completely botch the entire "lovers" thing. "Realms of the Gods" is both hurried and plodding, both too detailed and too vague, both attentive and dismissive, and the dialogue is atrocious. The enmity between Daine and Ozorne is impossible to take seriously; the Daine/Numair scenes are trashy and trite; the battle scenes are confusing and too fast. Most of the standard secondary characters we've come to know and love -- all the humans of Tortall, Kitten, Cloud -- are almost entirely absent. We see almost none of the promising characters from Emperor Mage, like Lindhall Reed and Prince Kaddar. Daine's shapeshifting and Numair's magic are both unremarkable.

Tamora, Tamora, what went wrong?

Perhaps she was hurrying to reach a deadline.

Anyway, my recommendation is to read the first three books of the "Immortals" series, but just get someone to summarize "Realms of the Gods" for you, because it's not worth the time and disappointment it takes to read it. I've reread it several times over the last, oh, six years, each time hoping it's not as miserable as I remember, and it's always worse. Spare yourself and skip ahead to the first book of "Protector of the Small".
