Editorial Review

"I am a good guy. Good guys don't do bad things. Good guys understand that no means no, and so I could not have done this because I understand."

Keir Sarafian knows many things about himself. He is a talented footballplayer, a loyal friend, a devoted son and brother. Most of all, he is agood guy.

And yet the love of his life thinks otherwise. Gigi says Keir has donesomething awful. Something unforgivable.

Keir doesn't understand. He loves Gigi. He would never do anything tohurt her. So Keir carefully recounts the events leading up to that onefateful night, in order to uncover the truth. Clearly, there has been amistake.

But what has happened is, indeed, something inexcusable.

It sucked! 2008-07-27
This book was awful. I was really excited about it because people told me if I liked Speak, I would like this. It was almost the worst book I've ever read - I despised the main character. What an idiot! Seriously, when you're a senior in high school you need to grow up and not be a loser. I'm sure Gigi (no comments on her name) felt like she was talking to a brick wall most of the story. Don't bother buying this book. If anyone told you that Speak and Inexcusable were built along the same lines...the only thing those two books have in common is rape. Speak is a much better investment.

Fabulous young adult (or old adult) read 2007-12-01
The novel opens with the haunting first line "The way it looks is not the way it is" - whoa! Keir is a graduating high school senior with a best-friend/dad, and two sisters. He drinks way too much, is liked by everyone, and is a self proclaimed good guy. Between Keir narrating his final year of school and giving a brief bio on his life for our sake, he fills the reader in with his current situation - which is shady at best. Without revealing too much of the plot, he is alone, with the girl he loves, defending his good guy status. Again, WHOA!

This book is spooky, creepy, and intriguing all over the place. The best part about it is the reader hardly realizes how creepy and what a thriller the novel actually is until the ending. The author's choice of telling the story from Keir's first person perspective is amazing, and really shapes the book. All of the character development, insight, emotions, and appeal are completely based on the reader's interpretation of the events and the story. I wouldn't say it's a nail biter, it's much too subtle for that...but it is a page turner all the way.

Keir is a good guy. He's about to graduate from high school and follow his older sisters to college. The reader will admire the closeness of his family: the father, a widower who has raised his three children alone; the son who adores his older sisters. Yes, Keir is a good guy.

When an opposing football player is gravely injured as a result of Keir's perfect tackle, we believe Keir. It's not his fault. He's a good guy. Right?

The reader will wonder, along with Keir, if it was really possible that he's been a part of the vandalism of a local monument. And surely Keir, a spring soccer player himself, would never have contributed to the football teams' severe hazing of his teammates after the soccer banquet.

When his sister's aren't able to attend his graduation, the reader empathizes with his feelings of betrayal. We understand his need to let loose on the night of his graduation and feel concern as he faces troubling choices. We feel hopeful when Gigi, the girl of his dreams, leans on him when her boyfriend stands her up. Just like Keir's sisters.

The evening becomes a kaleidoscope of emotions, which result in risky behavior, a three-hour limo ride across the state line, a visit to his college, and a night with Gigi. Keir's a good boy. He would never commit the inexcusable...would he?

I read this book all the way through in one sitting. It was riveting. INEXCUSABLE by Chris Lynch is a glimpse into a boy walking a blurred line into manhood. This is a must read for any young man who has ever been, or ever expects to be, in love.

Are You Kidding Me? 2007-11-21
This book was really annoying and predictable. It is easy to see that the author was simply trying too hard to make a point. Keir is a character that I found myself constantly becoming angry with and I do not understand how people can relate to him. The point, if there is one, is highly obscure. If you want a nauseatingly contradictory read, look no further.

Disappointing 2007-11-07
Ths story starts out alright, but it becomes choppy and hard to understand. It keeps switching from past to present, without much warning. The ending isn't satisfying, and although the basic plot is good, it's very confusing. It's also hard to relate to the characters.
It's okay, but borrow it from the library. It's not worth the money to buy it, unless you've read it first and liked it.

You'll Be Anti- Protagonist 2007-10-19

classic denial 2007-07-07
A strong story that I couldn't put down. Brilliantly planned and executed, the author starts out at the end of the story, then brings us back to it through first person narrative in journal-style. Through this, the truth slowly unfolds, even though it's colored by the main character's denials.

The main character, Keir, has a strong voice that keeps the story interesting and the pages turning. I was intrigued at how Keir had done everything he considered inexcusable, denied it to himself and his loved ones, yet still made me care about what was going to happen to him. Excellent story.

Quick page turner 2007-07-06
This book is a quick page turner and is, most importantly, easy to relate to. Should be a must read for many teens. It has an important story line but avoids being boring, drab. It absolutely tells its own story in a VERY original way.

Joe Leonard The Champ 2007-06-01
The book Inexcusable by Chris Lynch was a very interesting book .For me, being a senior in high school it's easy to relate to a novel like this. Although pretty much anyone in high school or a graduate would enjoy the book .Once you start the novel its really hard not to finish. At the end of every chapter I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

The story is about a high school senior who has been recognized as being respectful and achieving good grades. This all goes down hill once the end of his high school life approaches and more important decisions have to be made. The novel gives you a real aspect of what happens in high school and the problems one must face. It hits all the major focuses in a student's life. Grades, girls, drugs, sex, popularity, peer pressure, partying, family life, and more girls.

The only down side to the book was the flip flopping of different scenes. At some points of the book it's easy to get lost in what happens. It doesn't take away from the quality of the story though.

I recommend this book if you have some free time and enjoy reading. All high school students should read the book. It teaches you more about people and even yourself.

Ehhhh... 2007-05-30
While I'm all for the fall of the jock, buckling under his own stupidity, this is a little outrageous. What Lynch describes, but never states, is an extremely unbalanced young man, with some sort of personality disorder and a huge case of denial. This makes him hard to relate to, while making his thoughts garbled. The plot appeared to be alluring, but the style with which is was written is just revolting. The switching between present and past tenses is confusing, not poetic. Character relationships are obscure at times. I found the entire "that wasn't me" attitude a little hard to take after the first few incidents.
Save the money, or buy a book more worthwhile than this one.
