Editorial Review
Not all dreams are sweet.

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....

From J. Kaye's Book Blog 2008-06-29
Although this book will not get a 5-star rating, it was one of the best YA books I've read this year. It's well worth the price of admission. It will grab you emotionally and won't let go.

The only problem I had with the book was in the believability department towards the end of the book with Cabel's secret. I don't want to disclose much, because it will give away too much of the story. But having lived of drug raids, police, etc. in high school, I didn't find any part of that real. In fact, I knew who Cabel was and what he was up to before it was revealed.

The book left me with questions, which is good. Scheduled in early 2009 is FADE, the second in this series and I can't wait. I'd like to know more and where this author is going with this story. This was a fantastic first book in a series, even with the slight believability issue.

The characters got under my skin and I kept thinking about them way after the book was finished. Loved it so much, I stopped reading the other books just so that I could finish the story.

Better than I expected! 2008-06-28
The first reason I decided to buy this book was because not many good stories involve dreams. I have to say that I was sucked into the story as Janie struggled to figure out what was happening to her. I was happy when Cabel entered her life. I kept thinking love interest, love interest, but he was really more than that.

I was extremely surprised at the direction the end of the novel went in and must say that I enjoyed it throughly. I lent it to my cousin merely moments after finishing it. It was a great read! Money well spent.

What a Read! 2008-06-23
I read this book in one sitting. I loaned it to my niece, who also read it in one sitting. She loaned it to a few of her friends - you guessed it - who also read it in one sitting. It's one of those books you just can't put down. The love story is sweet. The premise is out of this world. And the writing is snappy and exciting. I'd recommend it highly.

Wake Up and Read This Book! 2008-06-10
Ever since she was eight years old, Jamie Hannagan has been falling into other people's dreams. She can't help it; no matter what she tries, she can't escape them. Now that she's a senior in high school, she's starting to get sick of experiencing other people's dreams and nightmares. But since a lot of people sleep in school, it's a challenge for Jamie to not get sucked into dreams.

All Jamie wants to focus on is completing high school and working her job to fund college. But things get harder when she falls into Cabel Strumheller's nightmares. These are more terrifying than all the others she's experienced. And what's even more surprising is that Cabel sees her in his dreams seeing him. Soon, they develop a relationship, but it is plagued with arguments and misunderstandings over trust.

Wake was truly everything I was expecting in a good novel and more. The idea behind the story was extremely unique. I also liked how the plot was never quite what I was expecting. But mostly, I thought it was amazing how Lisa McMann could create so much emotion with only a few words. That takes a lot of talent. Lastly, Cabel is probably my new crush. Besides the physical attributes and sexiness, he was willing to give up his job because he didn't want to lose Jamie. Many times throughout the book, I found myself being jealous of Jamie's relationship with Cabel. She is such a lucky girl.

I highly recommend this incredible novel to all eager readers, and even to the reluctant ones. It is seriously one of my new favorite books. Everyone should immediately go out and pick up a copy for themselves before they're sold out. And after you finish Wake, look out for its sequel Fade.

Janie and Cabel as good as or better than Bella and Edward 2008-05-29
I too compare this book to the Twilight series of which I have long been a fan. I think I like Janie and Cable better than Bella and Edward. The characters Lisa McMann creates are extremely real. Janie and Cable don't have it good. They come from the wrong side of town. They are not star crossed lovers, but a real and true match. I know plenty of kids (I teach) who are in the same boat culturally and financially as these characters.

Yes, the writing style is different. It is very objective, but what Lisa McMann does that so few writers can is make all the feeling and emotion come through those few objective lines. None of the emotion is lacking.

Wake is a new favorite of mine and I can't wait until Fade comes out. I will pre-order it so fast! I just hope the series does not turn out to be a crime solving series. I like the relationships.

I predict Lisa McMann will soon be too overcome to answer her e-mail so send her one while you can! Soon there will be all kinds of fan sites devoted to the Wake series. I would put one up if I only knew how!

Who knew a book about going to sleep could be so exciting? 2008-07-25
What do you dream about?

Falling?

Flying?

Monsters?

Whatever you dream about, Janie knows about it.

She's been there.

She's seen you trying to run. She's seen you in your underwear in front of your classroom. At sleepovers, she sees popular Melinda dream about kissing Janie's best friend Carrie. Carrie is forever dreaming about trying to save a little boy from drowning. Driving down Waverly Street one night, Janie falls into a dream of a man with knife hands setting a boy on fire. At the Heather Nursing Home where she works, Janie sees a soldier dream of war and a woman dream of having one last night of passion with the man she loved.

Janie knows what everyone else dreams about, but she never has dreams of her own.

Her ability to enter people's dreams wasn't so bad when she was younger, but in high school a lot more people sleep in class. A lot more people have nightmares that Janie can't avoid. People like Cabel Strumheller, former bad boy, suspected drug dealer, total hottie.

And the owner of the nightmare Janie entered on Waverly Street.

With Cabel's dream, Janie finds that she's not just a watcher of people's dreams, she's a participant. And she's determined to help Cabel through his nightmare. That, however, isn't so easy to do when Carrie tells Janie that Cabel is hooking up with another girl and dealing drugs. Janie finds an unexpected ally in a resident of the Heather Home who leaves a note for Janie after her death. The note ends:

P.S. You have more power than you think.

Janie knows she can't go on forever falling into people's dreams. She'll never be able to have a college roommate, and she'll never be able to sleep with or even live with someone else. What she does know is that she must embrace her powers and help Cabel through his nightmares. If it doesn't kill her first.

Enter dreams.

Find the answers.

Help those who can't help themselves.

Lose yourself in a spooky, breathless world of secrets and deceit.

This is a book about dreams that will keep you awake all night.

Great idea convoluted with Horrible language! 2008-07-20
This book dissappointed me to my very core- what a great idea and excellent writing it contains but this is overshadowed by the constant use of foul language including the prince of profanity the [...] word. I highly discourage parents from allowing their teens to read this which will only further the moral degradation of our kids values. This book could have been great!

WOW!!!! 2008-07-06
This book caught my attention from the beginning. It tells the story of Janie, a girl that is able to go into other's dreams. The problem is she doesn't want this power and has no control over it. But then she falls into the gruesome nightmare of Cabel. This dream confuses and frightens Janie. On a trip, Cabel, a friend that is also from the wrong side of the track like her and her best friend Carrie, witnesses her going into dreams and goes with her. Janie ends up doing something she has never done, telling someone her secret. Janie's feelings for Cabel grow as his do for her, but then Cabel starts to distance himself from her and Janie gets even more confused and has no idea what to do. This story is unique and tells about true friendship and love. A short, but excellent read.

Surprising! 2008-07-03
When I bought this book, I didn't read the first page in the store like I normally do when I buy a book. Well, when I got it home and started reading, I was put off by the way it was written-I guess you can call it real time-and had I read that first page in the store I would have but the book back. Man, would that have been a mistake! I grew to love this style and found it refreshing. I loved the idea of this book. It was original and smart and not at all what I thought it would be. I can't wait to read the sequel...and yes, I liked this more than Twilight.

Loved this... 2008-07-02
I read this book within 4 hours, it was way too good to put down. I will tell all my friends to read this!
