unexpected great moment
2008-02-23
I happen to be waiting for exrays for my elderly mother and I happened to pick up this book and decided to make time pass quickly,so I began to read aloud to my mother (84yrs. old). Well, we both laughed wholeheartedly with each turn of the page. Even bystanders enjoyed it. So young or old, Mo touches the child in all of us.The humor was simple and well illustrated.I wish I had grandchildren to read to but I am sure going to get the entire collection, just in case, and in the meantime I will read to my favorite audience, Mom. Thanks for the moment!
Another Hit from Mo Willems!

There Is a Bird On Your Head! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) (Elephant and Piggie)
What a great book for emergent readers! Text is in "talking bubble" form, lots of high frequency word practice and best of all, sky high children's interest. My K/1 parents have shared in the reading logs that the older kids in the house hear their younger sibs read and laugh and read the books themselves before they get put back in the reading folders! We're huge Mo Willems fans in my classroom~~from the Pigeon books to Elephant and Piggie~~we have them all!
is there something on my head?

The Elephant and Piggie Books are fun for kids just learning to read and also very readable because of the word repetition, without being too boring because of the word repetition! My 5-year-old son loves being able to read it to anyone who will sit still and listen.
Great book for new readers !!!

My first grader (who's been struggling with reading in general and lacking motivation) just read this book aloud to me and her little brother at bedtime and they were both laughing hysterically at the end. We'd taken the 4 books in this series out of the library, and when I suggested it was time for bed she literally begged me to read the other 3 RIGHT NOW, which we did.
Few things make a parent prouder than hearing your child learn to read, except maybe when they finally get excited about it!
We are all now Mo Willems fans!
We love Mo!

My son (who just turned 4) -discovered Mo Willems books a few years ago - his first was "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus" which illicted belly laughs for MONTHS. We moved on to the other pigeon books which were well-loved also. Now that my son is 4 and recognizing letters and a few word books, we got the Elephant and Piggie books - he loves them and laughs heartily with each reading. The illustrations are hilarious - the elephant's facial expression crack my boy up. Also, the simple text is great for him to practice letters and reading easy words but he doesn't get bored with it. As a bonus, we live in Brooklyn and went to a signing - Mo signed this book for my son and it is one of his prized possessions.
Toddler (and mom) Love it!

My 3.5yo daughter absolutely loves this book. She will recite a line from it to me and we'll go back and forth "playing out" the story. I just mention "there's a bird on your head!" and she will fall into fits of giggles.
My 2yo son was not as interested (though if it doesn't have construction trucks or diggers, etc, he's not interested either). I think as he gets older he will appreciate the humor and story.
Cute story & I bought more based on the success of this one. I recommend to my friends w/similar aged kids.
Great book for daughter and mom

I bought this book based on the reviews of others. My daughter is 1½ and since we live abroad, I am trying to encourage her English skills and the book sounded funny.
She loves this book and can now count to three and say "hatching", although I am not quite sure how handy THAT word comes in...:-)
The book is always read at least three times and I enjoy it as much as she does - I can highly recommend this book.
A great book for reluctant "new readers"

My son is in second grade, does not like to read. Does not want to. This book "read itself". The repetitions were not tedious, and the story made him laugh out loud ---and me too.
He liked it so much, he made pictures of a little boy with a bird on his head, he put a bird beanie baby when he walked in to his classroom and told the teacher "there is a bird on my head"!
From this one, he was willing to read the other elephant and piggie, then more books.
Great early reader series

This series (Elephant and Piggie) is great for reluctant early readers! This is not the funniest of the series so far, but all of them include elements that help my child engage: slapstick humor, dramatic and funny banter, easy language coupled with sophisticated content. Hard to find combination.
Another great one from Mo

I really love Mo. He's awesome and has a way of connecting with both of my boys (ages 4 & 6), me, and the grandparents. The illustrations are great. It's perfect for my 4 year old. I would prefer more challenging reading for my 6 year old, but he loves it.
Enjoy!
