Great thing to share with your children!
2008-06-01
I started by buying these for my parents to fill out for me. I loved reading their responses. I learned many things about my parents that I didn't know before. It also sparked conversations with them about additional stories.
Now that I have children, I'm buying these books for me and (the grandparent ones) for my parents to fill out for them. And buying them as gifts for new parents.
Regarding the comments that there isn't a lot of room to write...The pages are small, but there are only a few pages that you would get that lengthy on your stories. You can always attach in an additional sheet of paper to continue your story.
I do not like the size of these books they are tiny

I do not like the size or design of these books. They are extremely small and are not made of a material that will stand up to years of wear and tear.
A gift that will last forever

I gave this book to my father for Christmas of 2000. He was terminally ill with ALS, and could no longer use his arms (or write for that matter). We worked on this together, and that was the best gift of all. I'd ask him the questions, and he'd answer. I'd simply record his answers for him. He died in January 2002. I recently found the book, and found it to be a treasure. Reading it brought back memories of our conversations, and the time we spent together.
Thank You Kathleen!
Great questions, but not enough space to answer them! :(

This book is set up such that every day of the year has its own question. This is great to keep dads on task and filling out the pages in a timely manner. Many of the pages are quite thought-provoking and encourage story-sharing. However, the space is MUCH too limited to adequately do so. For example, it is difficult to relate a childhood story in a space the size of an index card. And some of that space is taken up by the question! Couple that with someone who doesn't have TEENY TINY handwriting...and you have a problem. The questions are great, but there should be adequate room for an answer! For example, my father quickly ran out of room on "tell about a practical joke or prank you played on someone" but then there was an entire page for "what was your day and date of birth"?? That just makes no sense. Also, be warned that the font of the questions can be hard to read (as it is cursive and squished together). This is difficult for people with vision problems and for those whose primary language is not English. If you can get past that (and maybe supplement some of your own blank pages), this is a fantastic keepsake. It causes Dad to fondly look back on his life and remember events long past.
Overall review: It is a great way to share memories...but the logistics of this book need serious improvement.
Best Gift I ever bought

I bought this book for my Dad about 5 years ago. He passed away on Oct. 10th and there is nothing more valuable that he could have left me. You think you know a lot about your parents, but let me tell you, there are many surprises - all of which made me smile. Really an amazing little book.
now that you are gone...

I gave this book to my father for Christmas in 200. It was just a nice "coffee table book" that I would open to a certain date and read every now and then. After his death in 2004, it became so much more to me. I put the events in order of time, and began to write a book on the town he grew up in and it has led me to cemeteries of my ancestors from the early 1800's to early 1900's in St. Charles, Virginia. It is moe than jut a journal, but a piece of their life to treasure forever.
Precious Gift

I gave this book to my father for his birthday (in October) many years ago. Unbeknownst to me, he was busily filling it out and gave it back to me as a Christmas present two months later. I know the spaces are small in the book, but he used them wisely and I now have a valuable history I would not have had otherwise. I believe that if the spaces for writing were much larger, the task to complete it would seem overwhelming and wouldn't get done. (My mom agrees...she has the Mom version of the book). What I have from my father, who is no longer living, is a precious gift of memories I wouldn't trade for anything!
Grandpa, Tell Me Your Memories
2004-01-28
I ordered this book thinking it would be great. Upon its arrival, I was extremely disappointed. As stated by other reviewers, the space allotted for responses is too small. Also, most of these questions do not apply to most grandfathers.
Luckily at the time, I bought Grandpa Remembers by Judith Levy. This book is more visually stimulating, engaging, and FUN. I want my dad and father-in-law to enjoy writing their memories, and not become frustrated by lack of space and boredom.
Since I am a positive person, I will state that I like the spiral aspect of the book. The book is a nice idea; it just needed a little more thought before being published.
Disappointed

I recently bought this book for my 76 year old father. I am
very disappointed and will not be giving it to my father. Before
buying this book, you should very carefully read the product
details.
The book is very small, about the size of a stack of 3x5" index
cards. It is spiral bound down the one of the short sides. On each
page, a date and a question is printed along with a border.
Because the pages are very small to begin, this further limits the
amount of room my father would have to write his responses. His
handwriting his fairly big, so I he really will not have room to
write more than one or two lines.
The idea behind giving someone this sort of book is to learn about
them and retain something of their life when they are no longer
with us. The idea is good, but suffers from poor execution. I would
recommend against buying this book.
Great Gift

I am planning on giving these gifts to my hubby and myself, from our four year old son, for Christmas. In addition to documenting our history for him, I think it will be fun for us all to work on together, as well. I am looking forward to it!
