Solar Car Works in Phoenix
2003-01-04
During a sunny day in Phoenix, the solar car works great and stops when it goes under the shade. With less intense sun light, a little push may be helpful to over come the friction at the start.
What a nice way to introduce young children the clean solar energy!
Doesn't work as promised

The book is interesting, but the car doesn't work as promised. (It barely moves! and we even made sure to try it midday in full sun)
Terrible

My 9 year old put this toy together and then it didn't work. He followed directions carefully and it was a flop. I would never recommend this toy.
A great project

It works great under California sun. A wonderful hands on project for father and son. The book also tells you how to power it up with a battery. My 6 years old son enjoys it very much.
Solar Powered Car

My son (9) and daughter (7) love it. I used it to show them about solar power, electricity, direct current and more. It is a great tool for teaching kids about the world around them and how things work.
Great concept, inadequate design
2005-06-20
The car barely moved in the spring sun, and while it does better on a blazing day there still ought be some more margin of error, especially with the high price (Amazon's is good). The children I built this with were very disappointed. I will try adding more solar cells. Also the cardboard to me seemed likely to wear out, especially if the holes get enlarged. Overall a really neat concept but really the most important thing is that the car work first time out. Try again, Klutz.
Great learning tool for kids!

Recent generations have done an impressive job of polluting the Earth. Our children's generation will have to be considerably more successful in using greener energy sources. An educational and fun book that teaches children about solar power is The Solar Car Book. This book contains a build-it-yourself solar car kit with parts and instructions needed to build a solar car!
My wife Lynn built this car with Liam, our 5-year-old son. Not only is the solar car fun to play with, but the experience was an educational one that offered Liam the opportunity to learn a little about alternative energy and the importance of protecting the Earth.--Glenn Perrett
