Getting the Facts Straight about ADHD
2008-09-29
Finally, a book that doesn't talk down to parents, but lays all the facts, research and myth busting information on the line. "Taking Charge of ADHD" helps parents get a solid understanding of ADHD before jumping into the strategies for success, something most other books skip. With a better understanding, parents are better able to approach their child with an individual plan for success. The behavior changing strategies work and the information on medication is research based and solid. The book does not, however, discuss ADHD with primarily inattentiveness in much detail, other than providing a description of it. But for hyperactivity issues this book is a comprehensive and successful resource for parents.

Helpful, scientific resource

As a parent of a child who is seriously affected by ADHD, I find this book an excellent resource. My child's disability goes way beyond simple attention difficulties, and Barkley addresses this when he describes ADHD as a developmental disorder of self-control. When your child is affected to the very core by ADHD, medications do become a very plausible choice to help him have some quality of life. My son has many strengths, and we have chosen to use every available resource to bring those strengths to the forefront. I think Barkley's book is a solid, fact-based resource. My hope is that someday we learn enough about the brain to understand ADHD even better.
Good reference material

I'm a year into the search for help for my 8 year old son with AD/HD. Reading this book at first was a drag....I have been on the internet and learned a lot about the whys and the hows. However, what was very helpful were the parts about how to handle social situations and others reactions to the situation. It's hard to explain over and over why your kid is on drugs to your friends when they don't "see" the problem. At least this book gave me some vindication that I am in fact doing the right thing. I guess you could say it's a good security blanket.
The Best Book that I recommend.

There are a lot of books from so-called experts.
The reality is that the best book out there is Barkley's ADHD and The Nature of Self-Control.
However, that book is meant for professionals.
This book is the parent version of the book.
It is meant to deliver the best facts, pure and simple.
I say that as someone with ADHD for all my life and an educational psychologist for almost a decade.

This is an excellent book. I have a Master's degree in Special Education and have worked in my field for some time. I have heard many professionals talk about ADHD. I thought I knew something.....until I read this book. As a parent of a child with ADHD, this book is a must have. If you have accepted your child's disability and truly want to help him or her, buy this book. You will learn how your child's brain is functioning as well as correct parenting styles for you to help your child succeed and have a happier home life.
Everyone should read this book.

A wealth of real life information and parenting tools

This was a great book for me to learn so much about ADHD. It seems pretty current in research on what has and can be done. It was not an easy read for me but the amazing scope of contents and depth of specifics, discussions, and issues was just wonderful to find in one book.
My wonderful young grandson provides my motivation for my quest of knowledge, and that will be ongoing. I would not have wanted a lesser book just to get finished more easily or be lulled by one side of issues. I'll restudy and work with this material now and keep this book handy for future reference. The specifics of the 8 week parent training program seem really excellent and should help me improve our relationship and help our time together to be much more positive.
I will be getting other ADHD books, etc. and going to conferences, but I believe this book will "be a hard act to follow."
I hated this!

Just a brief note to throw an opposing opinion in the ring about this book. To be completely honest I couldn't even get through the whole book. I had to bounce around from chapter to chapter. I felt the author had the most condescending, he knows it all attitude towards the reader ever.
He makes several negative comments towards Christian fundalmentalists & Hillary Clinton. I don't think this sort of book needed that type of comments.
And I also though the chip reward system was an absolute joke. Who has time for such an elaborate behavior campaign? What about the other siblings? My mind would spin just thinking about it.
Lots of good information for parents

Russell Barkley really knows his stuff and offers many useful tools. There are steps to help you parent your child more effectively. Plus strategies to come to grips with the disorder.
The author actually answered an email from me. I was shocked to get an answer on the same day I had written to him. I did not really expect him to answer.
I could just wish for a little more hope. It paints a pretty bleak picture. As the mom of a sweet 5 year old, I have to hope.
Still one of the best books about children's ADHD

Dr. Barkley,
When my son's ADHD/ODD behavior got out of control, your writing helped me to understand my child's unique mindset so that I could learn how to fulfill his needs.
I appreciate your no-nonsense approach to explaining ADHD. I would rather face the truth of ADHD than to idealize it with pretty metaphors.
When I accepted the fact that ADHD will not go away, and it takes massive and immediate action to overcome it, I got busy helping my son.
Yes, I had to change my ways, but my son is worth it. That was eight years ago. Now he is 17, making Bs in school, and planning to attend college.
The magic began when I improved my communication skills and taught my son values and skills. That was only possible with the diligent use of a visual reward system, a token economy system, as recommended by you, Dr. Barkley.
Thank you, Sir, for courageously risking controversy by explaining the facts about ADHD.
The children of the world with ADHD and their parents need more straight shooters like you.
That is why I'm committed to bring more real facts about ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) to the fore with free informative reports.
I hope to one day shake your hand.
Sincerely yours in parenting success,
Debra Sale Wendler
