Editorial Review
A diminuitive, 12-year-old boy named Spencer (Joseph Mazzello of Jurassic Park and The River Wild) has been hit with every whammy possible: he's new in town, he's motherless, his preoccupied father and bored sister have no time for him, he's speechless each time he's near a girl he likes, and the school bully would like to dance on his head. Blessed are beleaguered boys in movies, however, for sometimes high adventure awaits. In Spencer's case, things get better when he finds a seven-foot-tall, alien robot suit that becomes one with whoever climbs inside it. Locked inside the metallic visitor, our little hero is capable of super feats and naturally goes after his tormentor. He also inadvertently leaves a lot of wreckage in his path from unfamiliarity with the suit's size and controls. This family film's message, of course, is that nothing can really make one stronger than learning to face problems within one's own skin. Then again, most people don't end up having to fend off hostile extraterrestrials who come to Earth to steal the suit for their own nefarious purposes. Written and directed by Manny Coto, this charming story relies a bit on some clever, well-executed special effects (the look of the robot's face as seen from inside itself is particularly ingenious), but it is largely driven by its actors' abilities. --Tom Keogh

Great Film... 2005-04-08
I am a big Joseph Mazzello fan and all his films I've seen have all gotten big 4 or 5's from me in the rating scale so I figured I'd give this one a shot. I was happy I did. The acting is avergley good except for Joseph who did a excellent job as always. The film is about a 12 year old kid Spencer Griffith(Joseph Mazzello) who is lonesome and just wants to be liked, one day when hes inside his room at night reading his comics ext. He catches a glimpse of a bright object falling from the sky and into a old junkyard not too far away. He investigates and ends up finding a cybor suit that he eventually gets inside of thus becoming the 'Star Kid'. He decides to do some payback to bullys and other people who have been mean to him but then a evil monster comes to the town bent on destroying earth and anything that gets in its way. Thats when the trouble begins.

The film is a nice and adventorous tale which i'm sad to say is impossible to find on DVD! I love this movie and is a great film to see if your ever depressed or just want to get 'out of this world'. I recommend it.

Great Movie 2004-08-25
This was a great movie! The only bad part of it was from the first few minutes of the film when Spencer is acting too much like a dork. Once he finds the suit, the movie's awesome. The movie was funny and cool and the bad guy is really cool too with all the things he could do with his body. Fun and interesting movie.

Awful 2002-12-12
This movie was terrible. Jimbob was the worst actor I have ever seen. He didn't know what he was doing, or how to act. For example, the scene where he is in the submarine, and the flying turtle blasts his head off, he looks like he is having fun. Wow. Can you believe it? I can't.

star kid is a star! 2002-07-23
i like star kid. i want a star kid suit myself to play with. he can fight bullies and look scary but star kid is really just a boy. my best part of the show was star kids special effects. it looked much realer than power rangers. they are grown ups, and star kid is a kid. the suit makes him look bigger and feel happier. if i get lonesome i ask to watch star kid and i pretend to be star kid after the movie. i like star kid!

The Rock Throw Is Classic! 2002-05-03
This is a great movie about a kid named Spencer Griffith. He is a pretty normal 12-year-old who gets bullied around a lot. He's into comic books. He wants to be friends with a certain girl in his class but whenever he tries to talk to her he goes mute.

One day while he was sitting in his room alone he sees something fall from the sky and land in the local junkyard. He goes to investigate and finds an a capsule. He throws a rock at it. Nothing happens, so he touches it. It opens up to reveal an alien suit that asks him if he needs transport. He says yes and goes inside. Spencer then proceeds to go around town having fun in his suit and getting back at his bullies. But a bigger evil is lurking around and soon he needs to decide the fate of mankind.

This is an excellent movie, it is a bit cheesy at times but I like it. Joseph Mazzello is superb as Spencer. This is also the first movie where he was the biggest name. I give this great movie 5 stars. But I don't recommend it to anyone who is not a child at heart or you'll just shrug it off as a bad cheesy movie.

PS: Is it just me, or does every Joseph Mazzello movie have things thrown? Especially rocks. Jurassic Park, Radio Flyer, Simon Birch, Three Wishes, and The Cure all have things thrown. It's a Joseph Mazzello movie trademark.

Star Kid 2008-04-16
This is a great movie that I had seen a few times on cable (DISNEY Channel)and I was glad to be able to get a copy of it online. It is a great story about a proto-type weapon cyborg suit that is sent to earth by it's creators to escape destruction on it's own planet which is under attack. A 12 year old boy, who is having problems of his own - lack of courage, etc. - finds the suit which he calls "Cy" and figures that his life can't possibly get any worse. So he enters the suit as the biotic host and becomes one with Cy. That's where the action begins. He finds out that, since Cy is a prototype, they must engage and battle a hostile warrior, and what a battle they encounter! The movie has a great story line and is full of comedy. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for an entertaining 90 minutes to break from reality and get away from it all. Kids of any age will really enjoy it too. I would categorize it as soft science fiction, but it is really more of a drama comedy.

Joseph Mazzello in his real comedic-drama role ROCKS 2006-10-20
Star Kid is a lighter film in the repertoire of Joseph Mazzello, and is the first movie where His name heads the cast. He carries this movie almost solely by himself. This is a fun FAMILY sort of film of the lighter sort and makes for a good time watch.

But, there is more to this movie. The vast number of close-ups of Joseph's face (when he is inside the alien-built cyber-suit) is a STUDY in good acting-concentration. I never knew that Joe's face was that expressive ( and while we are on this topic, did ANYONE catch Joe "pulling a Bugs Bunny" with his eye brows, in an early scene of Simon Birch?). Anyway, my point is that Joseph has a RARE and magical face that is wonderfully expressive. Star Kid is solid, and a fun flick to watch over popcorn or hot coco. For those who are BIG Joseph Mazzello fans, this film is "Sine Qua Non"--indespensable--for your collection.
You see more of him than anyone else and he carries this film from A-to-Z.
Best of all, it is Joe's first significant work at lighter fare/quasi-comedy. Popcorn anyone?

Good Family Movie 2006-06-30
Very good for the whole family to see. Has some comedy in it as well as drama. This little boy learns a lot about himself and his family when he finds and uses this robot suit
