Good repetition
2008-06-13
Repetition is a good tool for teaching kids to remember important lessons. This book does a good job of repeating that hands are not for hitting, and also suggests what hands ARE good for (holding hands to cross the street, etc.). My 4 year old loves this series of books and we refer to the text often in conversation with her to remind her of the important lessons.
Thank you!

We have to read it frequently but it helps my toddler to address her feelings and her frustrations without hitting.
good book for generating dialog

I saw this book recently featured in an article in a print periodical about child development
We've recently had minor problems with our 4-year old son acting out after preschool on days when he had been picked on by other kids. We got the book and used it is a bedtime story. It generated good dialogue (as good as you get with a 4-year old) and it made him think before he acted. It gave him some tools to use with the more physical kids so he resolves the problem in the moment without resorting to aggression. Wthat he doesn't have to resort to acting out to make the behavior stop. I am glad that I purchased this book.
We bought also 'Words Are Not for Hurting' and that one was not as useful for generating dialog.
Great Book

This book reminds kids of all the fun things they can do with their hands and what is unacceptable behavior. Easy to read with nice illustrations.

This book is nice, but not fantastic.
I think I wanted more creativity in what hands are for...
my toddler and his day care class love these books...

We love this series of books! My 20 mo. old little boy was making his way through all these phases, hitting, biting, kicking, as most little boys do. He was having "time outs" at home and at day care. After a very long weekend away on a trip with a biting grandson and an exhausted mommy, my mom came across the book "Teeth are not for Biting" and bought it for us. After reading it a couple of times with him and then re-reading it after a biting incident the biting ended. Shortly there after we found "Hands are not for Hitting" and the hitting stopped. I was so happy with the results I bought a set of books to donate to our day care center. They have had great results too.
I really liked the gentle, yet straight forward way it addressed the behavior while offering positive things to do with your hands instead of hiting, etc. The illustrations are colorful and playful. Wonderfully age appropriate.
What's also great about these books is that at the end of each one there are other tips for parents and caregivers about how to handle the behaviors.
5 stars for this series!!!
Great Book!

This is a really great book. When my 2 year old daughter started hitting, my daycare provider suggested this book. My daughter loved reading it at bedtime and her hitting has stopped! Now she will reminder other, "Hands are not for hitting".
Hands are not for Hitting

Hands Are Not for Hitting This book approaches the problem of toddlers hitting others and pets with imagination. Children find it fun and enjoy trying to find other things they can do with their hands without hitting. This would be a good book in an infant school library and is for anyone who interacts with toddlers on a daily basis. Will help positive development with social skills. Highly recommended for mums, dads and grandparents.
My kids like it a lot
2007-08-23
My kids like this book a lot. They each have a favorite page of the book, they fight over it, and they like to have it read to them. It is sturdy construction, and has not yet been destroyed or even seriously injured. On the downside, I wish that there was a better link between the words and the pictures, so that I could more easily go from reading the few words to pointing out something about the illustrations.
good, but too wordy
2007-08-06
This is a good book, based on the whole series. But to me, and my 28 month old son, it is too wordy. I have cut out a lot of it and picked out my own main points that deal with his behavior problems and left out a lot of other stuff. I think the board book would be better, like the others I have (Teeth Are Not for Biting and Feet Are Not for Kicking). Maybe would be better for older kids. But I still like the concept and he still enjoys it, just not as much as the other two.
