Editorial Review
TEETH ARE NOT FOR BITING Board Book by Elizabeth Verdick, illustrated by Marieka Heinlen. "Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth are strong and sharp. Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth can help you chew. But teeth are not for biting. Ouch! Biting hurts." Sooner or later, almost all young children will bite someone—a friend, a parent, a sibling. This upbeat, colorful, virtually indestructible book helps prevent biting and teaches positive alternatives.
The companion to our best-selling HANDS ARE NOT FOR HITTING board book (see page 9), TEETH ARE NOT FOR BITING gives reasons why children might want to bite. Little mouths feel sore when new teeth come in; sometimes kids bite when they’re hungry, tired, cranky, frustrated, angry, bored, distressed, or seeking attention. Author Elizabeth Verdick suggests positive things children can do instead of biting. Like chewing a chewy toy. Drinking a cold drink. Getting a hug. Telling a grown-up. Asking for help. And smiling…because while teeth are not for biting, they definitely are for smiling. Ideal for reading aloud, accessible and durable, this book also includes helpful tips for parents and caregivers.

Great teaching tool
2007-12-02
This book is a great teaching tool to help little biters understand that it isn't appropriate. It offers alternative ways to get over the urge to bite, too.
Great book, easy for kids to understand
2007-10-25
This book helped my child learn that biting is not OK. even when you are getting molars, or frusterated. Its simple and teaches that there are other options besides biting. My son now says "not ok biting". A must for those who are going through this difficult stage with their child. We read it everyday. Teeth are for crunching & smiling. Not biting. Please know that this is truelly a phase for kids and they will understand that is not acceptable and that it hurts our friends. A MUST for children. Excellent author, and illustrator.
It worked!

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the effect this book had on our little biter. As the 3 year old brother to two older sisters his communication skills ,or lack thereof, caused much consternation and ultimately biting. When we all sat down to read the book he GOT IT. Now we say and 'teeth are for eating!'.
We haven't had a problem since.
No more biting!

This book has been a great resource & asset for our son who kept biting his brother when angry. He likes the book so much that he keeps asking to read it. The book seemed to get the point across when all of our time-outs and talking had not changed the behavior.
Worked for our son
2007-09-28
This is the best book we have ever bought for our son! Our son was biting for months. Every week he had a least two incidents of biting, and MANY MANY attempts. The teachers would monitor him constantly.
We tried time-out, cold drinks, hugs, and prayer. Then his anti-social behavior went away for a whole week. We thought we were home free, until he started a new school. Again, the biting came back. The teacher said, "it's not a matter of if he will bite, it is when." He had five or six attempts everyday. My son was going to be kicked out of school. Then I read an article about these books.
I ran out bought the book the end of August. Thank God, he has not bitten since. He loves the book, and I attribute this book to his change in behaviour. He has not even ATTEMPTED to bite once -- knock on wood.
I don't claim this will work for everyone, but it sure can't hurt to try. Thank you so much Ms Verdick for an amazing book.

Teeth Are Not for Biting (Best Behavior Series)
This is a great book to read to toddlers to teach acceptable and unacceptable behavior. It has colorful pictures and using simple words easy to understand. This book also offers tips and advice at the end for parents and caregivers.
Great book for a toddler!

I wish I would have seen this book four months ago when my now 17 month old toddler was in his biting prime. Nevertheless, I still purchased it (his biting had already significantly decreased) and I'm very happy I did. Once in a while his biting will "resurface" and home we go after day care to take a look at his "Teeth Are Not For Biting" book. The words are very simple and catchy, the illustrations are perfectly colorful for a toddler (white and bright teeth being the focus) and he actually gets the hint that "teeth are not for biting"! I highly recommend this book to any parent of a baby/toddler. Good to have, especially before the problem begins.
Future Children's Librarian bears her "Teeth"
2008-03-11
The best behavior series is tackling children's less than desirable behaviors one by one;preventing kicking, hitting, the sharing of germs, tail pulling, and now, biting. The text highlights the benefits of teeth for activities such as chewing and smiling as well as acknowledging situations where children might want to bite and alternatives to biting. A variety of well-drawn illustrations present a variety of children in multiple environments. The text does not follow a predictable pattern-while some phrases are used repeatedly, the pattern changes a few times over the course of the text, from "Teeth are not for biting" to "Biting hurts" and back again, which may be confusing for the 0-3 year old audience. Parents may appreciate the resources for discouraging biting and assistance with teething available at the end of the book.
Cute book, message works!

Effective to stop biting
2007-12-03
As the director of an early childhood facility, we go through cycles of biting with the children. This book is one of the most effective books we use to help children, families, and teachers work through this difficult developmental stage. We have two copies--one for the classroom and one to send home for the parents to read with their child.
