IT's about time!!! A++++ Book
2007-09-14
It is nice to see there is finally a book written for those of us that have trained our own dogs and always want to learn more! I am retiring my first service dog and beginning to train a new puppy and this book was VERY helpful! About a year ago I suffered a T11-12 spinal injury and I was not supposed to ever walk again. My Std. Poodle was already trained as we used him for educational purposes in schools etc. As I have trained dogs to do all kinds of tasks since I was a kid. So, I decided to use his tallents and I must say he really helped me get through a tough time. From the PTSD to learning to walk again etc. I have since found that I am much more at ease having my partner with me. It makes life so much better. As I also suffer from PTSD after the accident as well as depression and if it wasn't for him I know I would not have healed as fast as I did. Those of you out there that use service dogs know what I mean. They become such a big part of everyday life.
Service dogs do change lives!! Remember even if someone does not apear to be disabled they may have an invisable disability that causes them to need the dog... They are not always training one just because they LOOK ok.
This book was NEEDED to help people understand what these dogs can do and to give those that can the ability to teach their own dog. I also highly recomend Teamwork 1 and 2 they where a big help with task training as well.
God bless the Dogs and Partners out there!!! :)
GREAT BOOK FOR THOSE CONSIDERING AN SD

I bought this book and already had a service dog in training, and it is still quite a useful book to me. However, being that alot of this book covers things that didn't apply to me as I already had my dog, it would be highly recommended for someone who is considering one. Do not overlook this book though if you already have a dog as it is full of useful information and training.
A thorough, easy-to-follow resource

Written by Marcie Davis, a paraplegic and service dog partner, and Melissa Bunnell, counseling and service dog expert, Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook is a thorough, easy-to-follow resource for anyone who wants or needs to learn more about service dogs and their partnership with humans, including caretakers of service dogs and potential partners of service dogs. Full-color photography illustrated this candid guide to important questions one should ask a potential service dog agency ("Once a dog is placed with me, will I own the dog or will the agency maintain ownership?"), how a service dog can improve one's access to the world, how to keep one's service dog healthy and happy from nutrition to grooming to proper exercise, coping with the loss of a service dog, and much more. An extensive appendix of service dog resources as well as an appendix of performance standards for assistance dogs rounds out this "must-have" for anyone seriously contemplating partnering with a service dog.

The Service Dog Guidebook, Working like Dogs. This book is THE resource book for service dogs - from personal stories, to checklists, to practical trips about service dogs. If you are considering a service dog, or training one, this guide is a must-read. Don't miss the insight into this amazing world! They didn't miss a beat on any and all information you would ever need, even down to the retirement of the loyal dog. Great pictures (especially the service dog who does the laundry- I want one!! haha)

Marcie has written this book from her heart. You will laugh and cry while reading this book as well as find out the basics of training or owning a service dog guidebook.
All dog lovers should buy a copy!
Excellent for developing Service Dogs

I am disabled, wanting to train my own dog before the disability gets worse. This is so well-written and yet concise. The photos are helpful, as well as personal examples of things which might happen. Thanks!!
Working with a Service Dog

This book is a useful "owner's manual" for handicapped people who have worked with one of the established training and placement agencies to acquire a trained service dog. It is full of information about the training received by the handicapped person at the training facility, on how to use and care for the the new dog, commands the dog may have been trained to obey, and even how to deal with the loss of the companion and helper of possibly many years.
This book will not be of as much use to those handicapped persons who are training their own service dogs.
disappointed

I was truly disappointed with this book
The authors address and dismiss owner-trained dogs in one sentence.
With over half the assistance dogs in America owner trained, I think it deserves at the very least a chapter.
It would behoove them to include the TEAMWORK books by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelly as a reference.
There are so many people who can use a service dog and so few programs available that any book on the subject ought to include the possibility of independently training such a dog.
However this book would be a good gift for anyone with an aging service dog. It handles the loss of a dog with compassion.
Light on training technical information

I think this book was interesting but it was not really what I was looking for. I was looking for more indepth training info.
Good for those considering a program service dog for the first time

As a SD user I did not find this book particularly helpful. I think it would have been helpful to read before I got my SD, but after 18 months together we are a solid working team. The part on the death of the SD was the only thing that really meant anything to me, as I am yet to confront this. I found much of it to be brief and not offering anything new to me. It is certainly the best overall book I have read on SD, but it is really only geared to those who are obtaining a dog for the first time from a program.
