What you don't know about steamboats could fill a book! 2008-01-26
The cover of this book, a large, beautiful photograph of the Delta Queen, invites readers to eagerly open and settle in with this book. After all, who in America has not heard of the famous Delta Queen? Once inside the covers, the book is filled with interesting photos encompassed in an attractive layout. The type is large and comfortable, and photo captions are clear and informative. A good amount of steamboat history is contained within. However, the factual timeline and the paragraphs themselves could use the help of a good editor. Maybe the author intended it to be read as a story, but there is too much meandering and nostalgia to hold the interest of young readers. The index is helpful, but the glossary does not contain all of the unfamiliar words found in the text. The author fully explains the mechanics and purpose of all types of steam vessels in both the US and Europe, but the reader is bound to trip over the occasional use of the first person voice, and repetition of facts not necessarily interesting to this generation of young readers, such as Gordon Lightfoot's tribute, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. In many instances there is just too much information. But having said all that, the reader who carries through will have a new wealth of knowledge that not many share, concerning points of interest such as reciprocating engines, side versus rear paddle wheels, lakers, bulk carriers and railroad car ferries.
