Editorial Review
Thomas Edison. Albert Einstein. Half of NASA. These are all extremely intelligent, successful adults who made great contributions to society and who are also suspected of having the developmental disorder called Asperger Syndrome. This relatively new diagnosis is being increasingly applied to both children and adults-in fact, it is now seen as running in familes. There are a lot of books on how to successfully raise children with AS, but until now, adults were left to figure it out on their own.

Dr. Juanita Lovett specializes in treating adults with AS and working with their families. In this book she shows those adults and their loved ones how to maximize the benefits of AS (including intense concentration, above-average intelligence, and high creativity) while minimizing the drawbacks (including lack of social skill, inability to connect emotionally with others, and propensity toward rage).

This important new book will help thousands of adults with AS learn to live happier, more fulfilling lives.

Solutions? What solutions! 2007-09-28
Made myself read the whole thing, looking for useful advice. Glad that's over with. Repetitive and longer than it needs to be, and mostly a waste of time.

Written by NTs for NTs 2007-08-19
This book may be useful for someone who is a friend or family member of a person on the low-functioning end of AS. For Aspies themselves, however, it comes across as condescending and pitying; it refers to people with AS as 'childlike,' and is mostly written with that perspective. The author seems to have a lot of experience with how AS looks from the outside, but not a real understanding of how AS feels or how AS functions beyond the psychological/neurological theories of people without AS.

There are a handful of social tips for people with AS scattered throughout the book. Some of them may be useful, but for anyone who has learned to cope on their own as an adult, and is looking for help beyond what they have achieved by themselves, there is unlikely to be anything new.

Autastic! 2007-08-02
The author Juanita Lovett has done her homework! This book is packed with information that is valuable to anyone wanting to know more about AS in adults. If you are living with an adult with AS, or are a parent to one, this is the book to read. The writing style of this book uses real life examples of partners, spouses, parents and offspring, to explain some real differences between Aspies and neuro typical people. As you read on, you begin to "see" your grown son, or daughter or spouse. It all makes perfect sense. For me, everything fell into place as far as my own undiagnosed Aspie son. From his baby years to his adult years, things made sense after reading this book. I could finally relax, quit blaming myself, and hopefully one day have him "see" himself, so that he too can relax and feel relief. I have high hopes now, after reading this book, that my son and I can one day come to an understanding of our differences, and provide for ourselves a wonderful, fun, loving, mother-to-son relationship. This is my unending hope. Simply understanding is the key! Thanks Juanita!

Outstanding!! Could have been my biography! 2007-05-13
This book is full of informative examples and valuable advice. My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it together. My Wife tells me it is as if somebody has observed our life and written a book about it.

This review was written on January 21, 2008 . . . not on February 6, 2007. 2007-02-06
The way Juanita Lovett expresses Asperger Syndrome in her book gives a wrong impression about Aspergers. It leaves one with the feeling like society would be better off to find a cure for Aspergers, along with making it seem like neurotypically structured people are superior.

Although there are truths to be found in this book, too many statements are written as if she really knows what she is saying. For example, she states that the skill of empathy is compromised in AS (page 183) and is an area of functioning that can be difficult to help someone with AS understand. It's true AS people do have trouble to recognize and understand others' state of mind and feelings when they are different from their own. BUT...she is either too arrogant or lacks the intelligence (or both?) to realize and know that what she says works both ways. Neurotypical people always have trouble to recognize and understand an AS person's state of mind and feelings. Ms. Lovett has to rely on second-hand information to write her book.

The ideal person to write about Asperger Syndrome in adults is an adult with Asperger Syndrome. The reason you will not find such a book written by an AS person is because it will only be truly understood by another AS person. An NT like Ms. Lovett gets her book published because most of the people who are seeking to buy a book to learn about AS are NTs and NTs feel most comfortable reading material that doesn't challenge their way of thinking and/or their egos.

If this review sounds condescending towards the author, then thought needs to be given to how the author sounds when she says such things (page 91) as "People with AS have difficulty getting the gist of the situation." Maybe so in instances she gives. However, NTs also have difficulty getting the gist of the situation in certain instances that AS people have no trouble with (such as rapidly noticing a long-range pattern that a typical person could never grasp).

A better book to read on the topic of Aspergers is by Tony Attwood called The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome.

P.S.- Would anyone know why Amazon.com would place the wrong date a review is authored on?

Best book on Aspergers I've read! 2008-04-23
This is the best and most useful book on Aspergers I have read. I was surprised to realize that I knew more than one Aspergers person! A truely useful book!

Helpful 2008-03-23
Being newly diagnosed with Asperger's, this book was a great guide to helping me understand the disorder. It did not, however, have much in the way of "solutions" as the title suggests. The focus was more on personality traits and challenges an Aspie might have, and very little time was spent discussing what to do about it.

It is a great starting point for newly-diagnosed Aspies and their family members.

Solutions for Adults with Asperger Syndrome 2008-02-16
This is a great book. We need more books about adults with Autism and Asperger Syndrome. It would be nice to find a book about people who are older than 50 years old to see how they cope in their later years and to see how sucessful their livies have been, especially after their parents have passed away and they no longer have people looking out for their welfare. Thanks again for the great book.

Focus on relationships 2008-02-08
This book is probably best for those who are new to Asperger's, including neurotypicals. Those with more experience may do better to seek a textbook on the subject. That being said, this is an excellent resource for understanding how relationships between NTs and those with AS both function and malfunction, and ways to cope with those difficulties. This book is not a tool for diagnosis or treatment because it is not a medical text. It is, however, a useful resource for healthier relationships between families, couples, and coworkers.

Rare help for adult aspserger's sufferers 2008-01-07
This is an excellent review of Asperger's and other autistic spectrum diseases. There being so little available for adults, it is particularly useful for relatives and friends who need to understand their Asperger's friends/relatives. Not all Asperger's sufferers will be able to use the author's advice. Only the highest functioning, most self-aware individuals will be able to adopt the coping mechanisms the author suggests. The writing is quite repetitive, but perhaps this was intentional. Good education for those who know nothing about the spectrum of autistic diseases.
