Excellent Insight into Autistic Thinking
2008-06-03
I am a speech-language pathologist who works with autistic adolescents. I also have an autistic two-year-old. This book was recommended by Michelle Garcia Winner at a workshop I attended, and I am so glad I purchased it. It is well-written, well-researched, and full of insights. I keep reading passages aloud to my colleague, who is actually enjoying hearing them.
I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, and other professionals who work with children or adults anywhere along the autism spectrum.
An essential contribution to the field
2007-08-06
This book is an essential contribution to the mental health professions. Katherine Paxton and Irene Estay blend theory, practice, and research on how people on the autism spectrum can be counseled effectively. It is both similar AND different from "neurotypical" people. For mental health, education, and families, this is a real how to manual that will help you build a toolbox of techniques that can be applied to the individuals you came in contact with. So if you're trying to help people on the spectrum cope with their emotions, anxieties, and confusion about the world around them, then start here.
