Raising NLD Superstars
2007-03-18
A must-read if you have a child who doesn't seem quite normal. Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) is still not understood by many health-care and educational individuals and which, if not addressed, can have a crippling effect on your child's development.
Marcia Rubinstien helps you to understand this affliction and deal with it in the everyday world around you. If your child was an early talker but seemed to start stumbling as his or her education progressed, has difficulty with fine-motor skills, fidgits a lot, takes forever on homework, can't seem to hurry or get organized, you need to consider that the cause might be NLD. Mrs. Rubinstien explains NLD in lay terms with clarity and humor, and offers solutions for both child and family.
I wish I had read this when my son was younger.

This book is incredible for parents of NLD kids. Particularly if you are not sure, this book helps to identify these kids. Early identification can save both you and the child so much heartache. It also will help you to be much more proactive for your child in the school systems. Written with a large dose of humor, the book is so accurate a large box of tissues may be in order as you revisit those situations that have been painful in the past. The book helps to validate and explain what before was a mystery. It gives practical ideas to make life with the NLD kid more enjoyable for all. And very fast reading as well.
Great Resource

This book is easy to read and doesn't just tell you what to do, it tells you how to do it. Very helpful!
Finally a book we can all relate to...

Finally -- a book my husband and I could relate too. There is a whole chapter designated to "hurrying" and how it is almost impossible to hurry your NLD child. This is one book that really put it all into perspective for us and one I could actually get my husband to read.
This was a great book!

When I discovered my son had NLD, and started reading some of the books out there on this topic, I became very alarmed, because the ones I read indicated that his condition was very serious, and that he might not be able to lead a completely independent life.
Raising NLD Superstars reassured me that is is very possible to have a child who lives an independent and fulfilling adult life - this book relieved my anxiety! There are really good strategies here that help you as a parent cope and help your child. I highly recommend this book.
It was like a handbook for my son.

My son was recently diagnosed with NVLD and this book was very enlightening. It helped to have some "aha" moments of things going on with him and how to make life easier for us all. A very quick read and very positive over all.
Very Basic Information

This book was ok. It was the first book I have read specific to non-verbal learning disability, but the information wasn't anything that new. A lot of it I had read before in investigating sensory integration disorder and dyspraxia. A quick read and ok if you haven't already covered a lot of ground on neurological based developmental disorders. If you are a closet expert I wouldn't spend the money or time.
Better than most of what's out there

There is embarrassingly little available for parents of children with NLD, and this book is not great but is better than most books. (The only one better is "NLD at school" by Tanguay.) This book at least does cover some of the basic issues that come up for children with NLD, but there is too much focus on how the author solved her own child's issues rather than providing a selection of ideas.

Excellent informative resource for parents with NLD's. Recommend this book for everyone who has children with NLD or is working with children.

Enlightening!

This book is jam packed with information about NLD. It's a page turner for those of you who need this very important information about your NLD child. Marcia has delved into areas of this difficult disability with a vengence, and has come up with some wonderfully positive solutions. I learned so much about NLD, that I highly recommend it to anyone that needs to learn more about the problems and solutions for a child with this frustrating disability.
