2004-02-29Do not let the government schools take over, however. This manual is best used at home by loving parents and not by ADA pundits who care far more about their jobs than your precious little child. The schools get massive funding when they can label as many children as possible "disabled."
You will gain valuable insight into how to teach your child the best in this gem.
Great ideas for accommodations & modifications
2003-04-26
This book has absolutely terrific ideas for how to modify and accommodate an NLD child at school. I have gotten papers from school, that my son did poorly on and then found the answers of how to modify the papers to make them do-able for my son (same work just presented in a way he can understand). Then I would show the teacher the idea(s). I have been doing this all year and have learned the majority of the accomodations and modifications I show the teacher are from this book. The teacher now incorporates these into all of my sons school work. This has decreased his frustration and improved his quality of scool work and learning. Would be a great book for a teacher that has an NLD child in her class.
Wonderful guide for Teachers to help NLD and AS students
2002-09-20
This book has been a great help for the teachers working with my AS son. It provides a subject by subject blueprint for modifying curriculum that makes it fast and easy for a classroom teacher to accomodate different learners. I've purchased a number of copies of this book because everyone in the teaching profession who sees it wants to borrow it.
A must for parents working through the IEP process for their children--bring it to your meetings and make the team read it.
Excellent resouce!

I found this book extremely helpful and full of great ideas. I purchased a second book and gave it to the school.
The teachers' now have a great resource when helping my daughter.
Thanks Pam!
A Blueprint for Success
2002-05-23
This book will save you years of trial and error, tears and frustration. Pam Tanguay has put her years of expertise in working with not only her own daughter but many children with NLD and their teachers into this excellent book. It is clear and gives very specific ways to work with NLD/AS children in each subject area. As a parent, I used it to write an IEP recently, and it was very well received by our team. We have tried many of the strategies in the book with success, and when teachers have a question, I refer them to a specific chapter. Our principal feels that many of the suggestions will help other LD students, and the writing ideas in particular will help all students. This book will be purchased for our Child Study Office. The gift that this book gives is a blueprint for success-ways that NLD and AS students can be the best that they can be, and in doing so not only gives the ways to work with these children, but the WHY. I feel that educators using this book get a real sense of the needs that these children have. My only problem with this book is that people constantly want to borrow it! Many thanks to Pam Tanguay for going before us and for caring enough to share what she has learned with others.
good clear resource guide to share with school

My son is 11 with NLD and this book will clearly help me in explaining to the middle school guidance department what exactly he needs to receive in order to succeed. Well-written and concise.
Helpful for Parents

This book is so helpful! I can't believe how much this book described our son. We were able to help ourselves become better, more understanding parents - and we helped the school with ideas to help him there as well.
Excellent resource for parent's with an NLD child.

If you are struggling with how to help your NLD child, then this book will be an excellent resource. The author uses clear, concise illustrations to help the reader understand the disorder and more importantly, what it's like to be a kid with NLD.
Included are some very practical and easy to implement suggestions to help the NLD child with math and writing. We've used a couple of the suggestions and had incredible results. Not only did our son complete the work correctly, but his success with these tools made him realize that he can do the work; he just needs the material presented to him in a way that he can understand. The cost of the book < $30...having your child realize they are capable...PRICELESS!
A wonderful place to start

As a school psychologist sometimes I need to have something from what to draw information - I have so much data and need words to define what I see. This book does a wonderful job of summarizing the types of behaviors and concerns that teachers bring to me. Being able to share this resource with them and draw from it as I attempt to assist parents and teachers with a student's learning profile is a joy. Thanks for all of the tremendous effort!
The light bulb goes on!

I am so happy with this book. It totally describes my daughter to a "T" and has been so helpful to me and all of her educators.
I always have it close at hand to refer to when we are struggling with homework or learning something new in school. I have taken all of the ideas on how to teach certain subjects, photocopied them and made a handy desk refrence for all of her teachers.
I also bought one for her school to have.
I wish though, that it had more insight on how to teach multiplication to these kids. This is one area that my 7th grader just can not get a handle on!
This book is great, it is easy to read, and it clearly tells the world that your child or student with NVld can learn everything if it is just taught the best way for them and the disability is all encompassing in their lives not just academically. The social issues are a huge part of it all!
Thank you so much for such a great refrence through every step of our lives!
