Asperger's Support

I have been looking for a means by which to introduce to my son the fact that he has Asperger's Syndrome. This book is a hands-on and developmentally appropriate tool for that daunting task. His special education teacher recommended it, and I now see why. It will be an invaluable resource.

To any parent or care giver for a child with Autism/ Aspergers this is an excellent way to gain insight into what your child is coping with and what you need to do to understand and help them. We first saw a copy of this a year ago and since then I have bought one for ourselves to use and one for the teaching assistant that works with our autistic child.
Good book for HFA/Asperger's!

This is an excellent book, one that was recommended by our school psychologist for my step-son, who has Asperger's. We have started doing a couple of pages of this book every school day in the evening as part of an "Asperger's Minute". I think it is very helpful, both for us and for him, to learn about Asperger's and how it affects his brain and behavior. We are hoping that we/he can learn to help him be more successful, and have better experiences, at home and at school. I highly recommend this book both for parents and for professionals to use in the school system.
Excellent Interactive Insightful

My husband, myself and our 12 yo son with Asperger's used this book for a weekly exercise around the dinner table. We went through a section or sections that would take about an hour (I pre-read the section). It was truly amazing the answers that the sections elicited from my son. It also gave us an opportunity to discuss how to handle social situations. We got to know him better, his sense of humour, the way he looks at the world. He is now 16 and we will be revisiting his answers for he and us to gain a perspective of how far he has come. Highly recommended!
Not for us, just yet

My son is 10 years old. He has not attained "theory of mind" yet. As we tried to work our way through this book, it became more obvious that he just wasn't "getting" how this book worked. I ended up having to answer for him at times so we stopped in chapter 3. Despite it not working for us yet, I will keep it and we will continue to try it because one day, he will get it. I know this book will work wonderfully for some families, just not ours, not yet.
Very helpful for a young person to understand themself

Designed for children with high-functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome, this workbook offers an approach for the child to learn more about himself. Faherty asks the child to react to various subjects, offering alternatives for the child to select. Features a special binding to allow photocopying.

This is an excellent book to guide older children and teens through what it means to be autistic and how to self-advocate. My co-teacher wanted to steal it from the library and I convinced her we should just buy our own copy.
Incredibly Helpful!

I am an adult with Asperger's, and even so, I found this book incredibly helpful in understanding better what Asperger's is, where I can expect to struggle, and how I can accept and live with my disorder. I highly recommend it to ANYONE of ANY age with Asperger's!

It helps the reader to understand asperger's/autism. A workbook for the student to help understand his/her behaviors and suggestions for the teacher/parent on how to work with the student in all areas of life. A must for anyone who deals with students who have asperger's/autism.

I just received this book this morning, and I am so excited. This is definitely the best resource I have seen in my 9 years of parenting a child with high-functioning autism! So right on. So practical.Even with the huge array of variations among children with HFA, the workbook does an amazing job of addressing the most common denominators, while drawing out each child's unique characteristics, or even just acknowledging their lack of thatparticular tendency. The workbook pages are an amazing resource to work through with a child to help with self-awareness. I know that my child will enjoy adding his input and creating this book about himself, and I know that it will be invaluable in helping him to understand and process the "why and how" of the way he interacts and struggles with life. The pages aimed at parents and educators are excellent, and contain insight I had been missing even after all of the time and work that we have done on this road. I am ordering at least one more copy for his school. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a bit awkward to have the kid workbook pages interspersed with the sections for teachers/parents. It would have made more sense to put them in separate volumes. However, this in no way detracts from the quality and value of the material in each. Absolutely, buy this book if you are a parent, caregiver or educator of a child with high-functioning autism.
