Awesome book for first Marine Fish tank
2008-06-03
If you've ever considered buying a saltwater fishtank - this is " THE BOOK " to read first. It covers all the basics you need for a Saltwater Fish tank with Live Rock and Fish.
This book gives a complete soup to nuts blueprint of the basics needed - equiptment needed - and even an option to get started on a smaller scale if need be - although the ideal minimum size would be a 40 gallon for Saltwater Tank - there is a blueprint for a 15 or 20 gallon tank - along with suggestions to get started on a restricted budget.
This book is a great reference book - but doesn't attempt to cover more advanced topics such as corals / refugium tanks ( I wish this would have been included ). I'd highly recommend this book as a first read compared to the other 4 books I've read. After reading this book - I'd suggest joining an online community like Reef Central or one of many other online saltwater forums. These sites can fill in the gaps for any questions taht may arise while getting started - or more advanced issues you may experience while upkeeping your tank.

Great start up book

I've maintained freshwater aquariums for about 7-8 years now and during the summer I thought I'd give saltwater a try. I was looking for a well regarded, easy to follow, and comprehensive book which would teach me the basics on how to get things started. After scouring all the different book reviews on Amazon I finally settled on The New Marine Aquarium. Its been about 4 months since I purchased the book. Today I have a 54 gallon marine tank set up with saltwater fish and inverts and they are doing very well. I purposely waited until now to write a review because I wanted to see the success rate of following the authors steps. With that said, I couldnt be more satisfied. This book is worth every penny. It covers all the basics and provides some very valuable suggestions. The best thing about it is that its a good read, unlike some aquarium books which can be like reading a medical journal this author provides helpful insights in an easy to understand language. Great illustrations and lots of valuable advice and tips are a plus too. Is this the be all/end all for your aquarium research? Of course not. I still did some research on the web but I always came back to this book for the final say on any questions I had. Highly recommended for those that are looking to start up in this hobby.
First Step

The title description of this book is way off. Please note - this is not the book you need if you really want to setup and maintain a marine aquarium. It is very basic and is worth looking at if you want to get a general idea about a maine aquarium. With that said, I really do like this little book. It is easy to find stuff in and does have a lot of useful information. Lots of good pictures and lots of good ideas, but really isn't all that you need to get going.
Very Comprehensive

This book covers all of the information you need to create your first marine aquarium. It is presented in an easy-to-follow sequence that helps the novice understand what is required to set-up your first marine system.
All you need to get started

If you are looking for basic and simple book to teach about how to get started in the Marine hobby then this book is it. As the title implies this book will take you step by step on how to build your first marine aquarium.
It also has excellent advice on what steps to avoid. Whether this advice be from an execution standpoint or in your thinking. For instance I found advice like "Avoid trying to follow conflicting advice from multiple sources." and "Have a coherent plan of your own." invaluable.
This book is also short and concise. Not a whole unnecessary arrogant ramblings that you find in some books.
If you already have freshwater experience after reading this book you should be able to start your first fish only marine aquarium.
