A must-have companion 2008-07-19
This is a must-have for going through the Story of the World series. My favorite part is the "continued reading" recommendations. I'd suggest not trying to do all the activities. We started out that way and it was taking forever.

I do have her do the map exercises for every chapter and try to read at least one of the recommended books (often a fairy tale/myth/legend picture book about that time/culture). When she's very interested in a chapter, we'll spend more time and do a project or two and read more of the books.

Great Resource!! 2008-05-25
This book series is the perfect balance between a scripted, rigid history program and a completely unstructured approach to teaching history. I use it in a homeschooling history coop group with 6 girls, age 5-8. We have a great time. I use the study questions, we fill out the map, and then we do a craft. We enjoyed forming the Nile river with dirt and rocks, building an "ancient home" structure in the back yard, and creating hieroglyphics in clay. I like a lot of the books she recommends as supplements. We use the coloring pictures to add to our timeline we are creating that encircles our homeschooling room.
The coloring pictures are simple, but I think thats better for boys who sometimes are not into detailed coloring. I purchased some extra coloring books for my daughter who loves to color.
Finally, I am a devoted Christian who appreciates the flexibilty to add biblical content as I see fit.

Captivating 2008-04-28
We have tried several hs history curricula and this is the first one that has captivated my children. I would highly recommend this!

Check for accuracy 2008-04-15
Overall, this is an excellent resource, but there are some inaccuracies. I still recommend it, just examine maps carefully. Ninevah is on the wrong side of the Tigris river on two maps. We aren't finished either, so it is possible there may be more errors.

Great homeschool resource 2008-03-18
Love these books. Don't buy just the textbook and not the activity. Its worth it. Only thing that would be nice would be if the pages to copy were preforated for easy pullout. Otherwise, no complaints!

Necessary Companion to SOTW 2008-03-01

time saver 2008-02-26
This product is a great time saver. It has ideas for encchment for each section in The Story of the World: Ancient times. It is primarily a book of reproducible coloring pages and maps so that children can focus on what they are learning and see where the stories happened. But for hands on learners the additional ideas about hands on enrichment activities are great.

History comes alive 2008-02-01
My children hated history until we started using SOTW. They have been so much easier to work with that I am buying the CD next.

Do not waste your money 2008-01-28
The text book is very well written, though it could use some good illustrations. However, this "activity book" is amateur and juvenile. With an creativity at all any teacher can come up instantly with far superior, and actually helpful.

Homeschool History Made FUN! 2008-01-19
I spent a lot of time reseraching History programs, and having been a homeschooler myself ... I knew what I did NOT want. I was homeschooled for religious reasons, but I homeschool my daughter for other reasons (namely poor school systems). This book, while availing itself to Christians by recognizing that Christianity had a large part in history... it does NOT exclude teaching that doesn't base itself in the Christian beliefs.

That being said... my second grader and I started in on this program with Volume 1 this year... and we're both in love. We're simply overwhelmed with the fun activities and ideas! We've been able to incorporate her grandparents into the fun activities.. and every day of school, history is the first subject she wants to do. It's so interactive and fun, she doesn't want to skip a thing, and each chapter, we end up using the reference resources listed, and finding our own. This program keeps a VERY distractable and active youngster interested in her studies, and still offers the structured support through the tests booklet (available separately) .. I'm learning as much as she is through the whole thing. This program by FAR exceeds expectations, and We plan to go through the whole series, even if each book may take us longer than a year to complete... we even plan to continue history lessons over summer vacation, because they're too much fun to stop!

I highly recommend this program.. it lends itself to virtually any learning style, and is hands-on and fun ... explores everything from arts and crafts to science, geography, writing... NOT just history!
