GREAT SOUTHERN ROCK COLLECTION
2007-03-13
The Allman Brothers' A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is arguably the best greatest hits compilation ever assembled and released within the Southern Rock genre.
Indeed, it is a most enjoyable listen. It has the early hits with the fine-tuned organ and the top-notch guitar work of the great Allman Brothers. The very early tracks from the 1969-1970 period, Whipping Post and all, are quite appealing and are reminiscent of those darker tunes in the style of Sugarloaf's Greeneyed Lady and Santana's Soul Sacrifice.
The commercially successful records that put the Allman Brothers at the top of the charts but were, sadly, recorded and released well after the death of Duane Allman are all there, from the number 2 hit, Ramblin' Man, to the immortal instrumental that has received international accolades, namely Jessica.
For those who want a perfect Allman Brothers sampler without delving into the boxed sets or anything that is outside that frequently played on the classic rock radio stations, this is it. You have the signature live and studio pieces that have preserved the Allman Brothers' legacy. 'Nuff said.
Great CD from one of the greatest bands...
2006-11-05
This is one of those CDs that takes me away to a different place every time I listen to it and there are very few artists that can achieve that. The Allman Brothers were (and still are, albeit with an altered lineup)the best blues/rock band ever, in my opinion. This "Decade of Hits" does nothing to dispel that opinion. I love every single song presented here. My particular favorites are "Dreams" (which features a rare, super slide-guitar by Greg Allman); "Statesboro Blues"; "One Way Out" (with the extraordinary slide-guitar race between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts); "Revival" with a chorus that makes one think of a Deep South gospel choir; the exquisite "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" which is pure Allman jam with no vocals...the list goes on and on. If anyone out there needs a crash-course in the blues, this is a one-stop class. You will not regret purchasing this.
A great collection of signature songs from a great American band
2006-08-14
The Allman Brothers Band epitomizes just how much Southern rock has become part of the American music history. They were the first one the scene to put together many different musicial influences to come up with a rock sound that differed from the blues-rock bands that came out of the UK during the 60's and all the way through the mid-70's. Taking their influences from such diverse southern music styles as gospel, jazz, bluegrass, country and, most of all, the root of all that is rock: the blues. Helping pioneer the dueling lead guitarists (Thin Lizzy had also started using this style of guitar arrangement), The Allman Brothers Band had what many consider two of the best rock guitarist who ever picked up the instrument in Duane Allman and Dicky Betts. As great a player as Betts was the band and its sound would be known throughout by the slide-guitar work of Duane with his brother Gregg Allman fronting the band and its well-written tunes.
Throughout this album collection are the many works of the band from its beginnings up to and past the death of the great Duane Allman. His great blues sound in "Midnight Rider", "Whipping Post", and "Statesboro Blues" makes this album a must for blues fans and those wanting to get to know the band for the very first time. Duane Allman's final piece before his untimely death in 1971 is an instrumental duel between himself and Dicky Betts in the great "Little Martha". There's more great works from the band even after Duane's death with "Ramblin' Man" being their most successful. But in the end, the band was Duane Allman and even with the rest of the band doing great work afterwards, the sound was never the same.
A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is a great album compilation for people new to The Allman Brothers Band and willing to check out their best and well-known work. Once they've gone through this album then they're more than ready to check out the full albums from which the selections were taken from.
Good Collection

A good collection of Allman Brothers music on one cd. I have most of the songs on several other cd's but liked having them all on one. Recommend to Allman Brothers music fans.
Steve Gluda mistake

Don't mean to be picky, but I'm a big fan of Billy Joe Shaver and just wanted to let Steve know that B.J. wrote "Rambling Man", but Betts did do a great job. A little side note, a friend of mine was a nurse in a drug-treatment facility in Atlanta where Gregg and Dicky were treated. She said Betts was a great guy and Allman was a real jerk.

This is older music that still rocks into 2007. I bought this for my husband as a birthday present and got a very pleased husband for my trouble. Check out Gov't Mule if you like Allman Brothers.
LOVE IT

I love this CD. I wish there were more hits on it, but hey. I like The Allman Brothers Band loads better than Greg Allman on his own. It took me awhile to finally find the song/s I like, done the way I remember them. Glad I finally found this one.
